Early Life and Beginnings

Nick Grimshaw was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, and grew up there. He went to the University of Liverpool from 2002 to 2005. There, he studied Communication and Media. While at university, he was also part of the student radio station, ICON Radio. This was where he first started his career in broadcasting.

Grimmy's Career in Media

Nick Grimshaw has had a long and exciting career in both radio and television. He is known for his friendly personality and for connecting with young audiences.

Radio Career Highlights

Grimshaw joined BBC Radio 1 in September 2007. He started by co-hosting a youth show called Switch with his friend and fellow DJ, Annie Mac. He hosted this show by himself for nine months.

From October 2008 to May 2009, Grimshaw hosted Radio 1's Weekend Breakfast Show. Then, on 1 June 2009, he moved to the 10 PM to midnight slot. He often joked about how long he would stay in this role. He also had a fun segment called "1000 Albums Everyone Says You Should Listen To".

On 11 July 2012, it was announced that Grimshaw would take over the Radio 1 Breakfast show. This was a very big role, as he replaced the long-time host Chris Moyles. His first breakfast show was on 24 September 2012.

In November 2012, Grimshaw made headlines for comments about Robbie Williams's song "Candy". He also joked about Rihanna cancelling an interview. These moments showed his playful and sometimes cheeky style.

His Breakfast Show audience numbers changed over time. In February 2014, his show gained over 700,000 listeners, reaching 6.3 million weekly. The BBC said this was part of their plan to attract younger listeners.

In March 2014, he completed a twelve-hour bicycle ride for Sport Relief. This event helped raise over £115,000 for charity. He also took part in the Clash of the Titans event later that year.

In July 2017, the BBC shared that Grimshaw's salary was between £350,000 and £399,999. In October 2017, his Breakfast Show had 4.93 million listeners. The BBC still said it was important for young people.

On 31 May 2018, it was announced that Grimshaw would leave the breakfast show. He swapped shows with Greg James, moving to the 4-7 PM drivetime slot. On 30 June 2021, Grimshaw announced he would leave Radio 1 after 14 years. His last show was on 12 August 2021.

On 9 January 2025, the BBC announced that Grimshaw would become the new presenter of BBC Radio 6 Music's breakfast show. He had already covered for the show since August 2024.
