Sir Nicholas Grimshaw (born October 9, 1939 – died September 14, 2025) was a famous English architect. He was known for designing many modern buildings. Two of his most famous works are the Waterloo International railway station in London and the amazing Eden Project in Cornwall. He also led the Royal Academy for several years and was the head of his own architecture company, Grimshaw Architects. He received a very special award called the RIBA Gold Medal for his work.

A Life of Design and Building

Nicholas Grimshaw was born in Hove, England, on October 9, 1939. His father was an engineer, and his mother was an artist. This meant Nicholas grew up with a love for both building things and art. He enjoyed playing with Meccano and building tree houses and boats. These early interests showed his talent for construction.
Education and Early Career
He went to Wellington College until he was 17. Later, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. He then won a special scholarship to study architecture in London. This allowed him to travel and learn about architecture in Sweden and the United States. He finished his studies in 1965.
After school, Nicholas Grimshaw teamed up with another architect, Terry Farrell. They worked together for 15 years. In 1980, he started his own company, called Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners.
Famous Projects and Awards
Nicholas Grimshaw became very well-known for his unique designs. In 1989, he won an award for his design of a printing factory in London. He also designed Britain's building for the World's Fair in Seville in 1992.
One of his most famous projects was the Waterloo International railway station in London. This station won the 'Building of the Year' award in 1994. His company grew and opened offices in many cities around the world.
From 2004 to 2011, Nicholas Grimshaw was the President of the Royal Academy of Arts. This is a very important role in the art and architecture world.
Nicholas Grimshaw passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 85. He left behind many incredible buildings that show his talent and vision.

Awards and Special Recognitions
Nicholas Grimshaw received many important awards for his work.

- He also received an honorary degree from Heriot-Watt University in 2004.
- In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious RIBA Royal Gold Medal. This is one of the highest honors an architect can receive.
