About Nicholas Grimshaw

Nicholas Grimshaw was born in Hove, England, on October 9, 1939. His father was an engineer, and his mother was a portrait painter. This meant he grew up with an interest in both building and art.
He had family members who were also involved in engineering and health. One of his great-grandfathers built dams in Egypt. Another great-grandfather helped improve Dublin's drainage system.
When he was two and a half years old, his father passed away. Nicholas grew up in Guildford with his mother, grandmother, and two sisters. From a young age, he loved building things. He enjoyed playing with Meccano and building tree houses and boats.
Education and Early Career
Grimshaw went to Wellington College, Berkshire until he was 17. From 1959 to 1962, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. He then won a scholarship to study at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
While studying, he won more scholarships to travel. He visited Sweden in 1963 and the United States in 1964. He finished his studies in 1965 with high honors. Two years later, in 1967, he became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Starting His Own Company
Nicholas Grimshaw worked with another architect, Terry Farrell, for 15 years. In 1980, he started his own company, Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners.
In 1989, he won a national award for his design of the Financial Times printworks in East London. He also designed Britain's building for the Seville Expo in Spain in 1992.
In 1993, he received an award called a CBE. The next year, his design for the Waterloo International railway station was named 'Building of the Year'. In 1994, he also became a member of the Royal Academy.
Today, Grimshaw's architecture company is known all over the world. It has offices in major cities like London, New York, Melbourne, and Sydney.
