Oxford Ice Rink facts for kids
The Oxford Ice Rink is a cool place in Oxford, England, where you can go ice skating. It's a big ice rink, about 56 meters long and 26 meters wide. You can find it on Oxpens Road, just a short walk from Oxford city centre and the train station.
This ice rink has a really interesting story! People started raising money for it way back in 1980. A group called the Oxford Ice Skating Trust (OXIST) began the project. Later, the Oxford City Council took over and still owns and manages the rink today.
The building was designed by a famous architect named Nicholas Grimshaw. It opened in 1984 with an exciting ice hockey game. The first game was between the Oxford City Stars and the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club. The rink looks a bit like a ship because it has two tall masts. This unique design earned it the nickname "the Cutty Sark". The front of the building has huge windows, letting in lots of sunshine.
Fun Activities at the Rink
The Oxford Ice Rink offers many ways to enjoy the ice. You can join public skating sessions, where everyone can glide around. They also have fun disco nights on the ice with music and lights!
If you want to learn how to skate, you're in luck. The rink offers lessons for both individuals and groups. You can learn figure skating or ice dance from qualified instructors.
Who Manages the Rink?
In 2009, the Oxford City Council chose a company called Fusion-Lifestyle Ltd to manage the rink. Since March 31, 2009, Fusion-Lifestyle has been in charge. This agreement helps make sure the rink will be around for a long time. Fusion-Lifestyle also helps keep the building updated and in great shape.
