About Children in Need
Children in Need gets a whole evening on BBC One each year. This has happened since 1980. During this evening, the BBC shows events that help raise money. This money goes to charities that work with children across the UK.
The programme's friendly mascot is called 'Pudsey Bear'. Pudsey is a yellow teddy bear with a bandage over one eye. He first appeared in 1985. Pudsey and the Children in Need logo were updated in 2007. Children in Need officially became a registered charity in 1989.
How Money is Raised
Most of the money for Children in Need comes from everyday people. They often raise it by taking part in sponsored events. A fun example is sitting in a bath full of baked beans! Many companies also give money or support. For example, HSBC has helped with banking. BT has helped with the phone lines for donations.
On the night of the main TV show, many famous people appear. They support the cause and ask viewers to donate. There are often different performances, like funny sketches and musical acts. The show also features short films. These films show how the money is used to help children.
Celebrities from both the BBC and other TV channels like ITV take part. They often appear as their TV characters or on their show sets. A popular part of the show is when BBC newsreaders perform a musical number. In 2006, they did a "James Bond" theme. In 2008, it was a "Mamma Mia!" theme. Stars from new West End musicals also perform songs from their shows.
The total amount of money raised is shown on a screen about every hour. The presenters always say, "every penny counts." This helps encourage people to donate even more.
How the Money Helps Children
The money given to Children in Need is used in many ways. After the yearly appeal ends, the money is given to different organisations. These groups help children who are 18 years old or younger.
The children who receive help often have special needs. This might include mental, physical, or sensory disabilities. Some children might have behavioural or psychological challenges. Others live in poverty or difficult situations. Some children are in distress or have been neglected. Children in Need provides important support for these young people.
