Coronation Street (often called Corrie) is a very popular British soap opera TV show. It was created by Granada Television and first shown on ITV on 9 December 1960. The show is about the lives of people living on Coronation Street in Weatherfield. This is a made-up town, but it's based on a real area in Salford, England. The street itself was supposedly built in 1902. It was named to celebrate the crowning of King Edward VII.

How the Show Started
The idea for Coronation Street came from a scriptwriter named Tony Warren. He worked at Granada Television in Manchester in 1960. At first, his idea was not accepted. But a producer named Harry Elton convinced the company to try it. They decided to make 13 pilot episodes.
Becoming a Hit Show
The show quickly became very popular. Within six months of its first episode, it was the most-watched show in Britain. Today, Coronation Street is a big part of British culture. It has been very successful for Granada Television and the wider ITV network.

A World Record Holder
On 17 September 2010, Coronation Street made history. It became the world's longest-running TV soap opera. This amazing achievement was officially listed in Guinness World Records. On 23 September 2015, the show even broadcast a live episode. This was to celebrate ITV's sixtieth anniversary.
Watching the Show
The show airs six times a week. You can watch it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Each episode is usually 30 minutes long. Sometimes, there are special 60-minute episodes. Since 2017, older episodes from 1986 onwards have also been shown weekly on ITV3. The show currently gets around 8 million viewers for each episode.
