Blane Muise (born on May 4, 1993), known by her stage name Shygirl, is an English singer, DJ, rapper, and songwriter. She is also a co-founder of the record label and group called Nuxxe. Shygirl's music mixes different styles like dance music, hip-hop, and electronic sounds. Her unique style is sometimes called "experimental pop" or "deconstructed club" music, which means it plays with traditional song structures and sounds. She has also been linked to the "hyperpop" music scene, which is known for its bright, futuristic, and often exaggerated sounds.

Shygirl became well-known after working with her friend and fellow artist Sega Bodega. She also collaborated with famous experimental music producers like Arca and Sophie. Even superstar Rihanna noticed her, using Nuxxe tracks in her Fenty Beauty commercials and fashion shows. Shygirl has released many songs since 2016. She has also put out three EPs (Extended Plays) called Cruel Practice, Alias, and Club Shy. Her first full album, Nymph, came out on September 30, 2022. Music critics really loved it.

Early Life and Music Journey

Shygirl was born in South London and grew up in the Blackheath area. Her family comes from Grenada. She has described herself as someone who loved staying home and reading a lot when she was younger. She was even the "head girl" at her secondary school, which is a student leader role. Later, she studied photography at the University of Bristol. She would travel back to London on weekends to attend parties.

In 2016, Shygirl released her first song, "Want More." It was produced by Sega Bodega. This song was the very first release from the Nuxxe label, which Shygirl started with Sega Bodega and Coucou Chloe. She continued to work with Sega Bodega on her songs "Msry" and "Nvr" in 2017. She had also appeared on his song "CC" earlier that year. By 2018, Shygirl decided to leave her job at a modeling agency to focus completely on her music career.

In May 2018, Shygirl released her first EP, Cruel Practice, through Nuxxe. This EP received good reviews from music magazines like Pitchfork and Crack Magazine.

She was featured on Arca's song "Watch" from her 2020 album, Kick I. Before that, Shygirl and Arca worked together on a song called "Unconditional." All the money from that song went to support Black Lives Matter and Inquest UK, which are organizations that help people. In November 2020, Shygirl released her second EP, Alias, with the Because Music label. This EP also got positive attention from Pitchfork, Vogue, and NME. Alias was even named one of the best EPs of 2020 by the music publication MusicNGear.

In June 2021, Shygirl released a performance film called "Blu." It showed her performing songs from her Alias EP. It also included a new song called "BDE," featuring British rapper slowthai. She released "BDE" as a single the next day. Later, in September, she released the BDE 3XL remix EP. Shygirl and British producer Mura Masa were also featured on a remix of Lady Gaga and Blackpink's song "Sour Candy." This remix was part of Lady Gaga's Dawn of Chromatica remix album.

In September 2022, Shygirl released her first studio album, Nymph. The album was highly praised by critics from NME, Crack Magazine, and Pitchfork. On September 15, 2023, Shygirl was the opening act for the Sugababes' concert at The O2 Arena. Shygirl also opened for the Sweat Tour across North America from September 15 to October 23, 2024, performing with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan.
