Later, she used GarageBand to record her own early songs late at night in her university dorm. She uploaded her first songs to SoundCloud as PinkPantheress, but they didn't get much attention at first.
In December 2020, a video she posted on her personal TikTok account got over 500,000 likes. After this, she shared a short part of her song "Just a Waste" on TikTok. This song used music from Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall". The snippet quickly became very popular on the platform.

Artistic Style
Inspirations and Influences

PinkPantheress got her stage name from her TikTok account. It was inspired by a question from the game show The Chase about what a female panther is called, and by The Pink Panther movies.
She has named Imogen Heap, Lily Allen, Kelela, and Kate Nash as her biggest influences. Other artists she looks up to include My Chemical Romance, Just Jack, Michael Jackson, Kaytranada, and Frank Ocean. She also gets ideas for her melodies and beats from K-pop songs, Blink-182, Good Charlotte, Green Day, early Panic! at the Disco, Linkin Park, and Frou Frou.
PinkPantheress has said that Hayley Williams from Paramore is a "big influence" on her as a performer. She decided she wanted to be a professional musician at 14 after seeing Williams perform at Reading Festival. She also shared that an interview with Doja Cat inspired her to pursue music. Lil Nas X inspired her to post her songs on TikTok.
Music Sound and Lyrics
PinkPantheress's music is described as pop, R&B, bedroom pop, dance, alt-pop, drum and bass, 2-step, jungle, and hyperpop. She often uses samples from other songs, especially dance music from the 1990s and 2000s, as well as jungle, funk, UK garage, and pop songs.
She usually writes her own songs, which are often short. She believes a song doesn't need to be longer than two and a half minutes. She also thinks songs don't always need a bridge, a repeated verse, or a long ending. She describes her music as alt-pop and a "home-friendly" type of drum and bass. She says she writes "sadder" or "dark" lyrics to connect with young people. She often contrasts these lyrics with "happy instrumentals." PinkPantheress has mentioned that her lyrics are usually not about her own life. She enjoys telling stories through her music.
Experts have noted that her songs often have "fast-paced breakbeats" and "ASMR-like refrains." Her music has been called "alt-girl rap" and uses a "confessional, almost sweet rap-singing" style. She uses older production methods to create a nostalgic sound that reminds people of 1990s UK culture. Her "DIY aesthetic," which started with GarageBand experiments, is a key part of her music.
Her vocals are described as "sweet but unsettling," "angelic," "girlish," and "slight." Her lyrics are often called "sad" and "wistful." Her music is seen as a mix of sounds that feel both old and new at the same time. She has given fast electronic music styles like drum and bass an "introspective, romantic bedroom sound" with her quiet vocals.
