Early Life and Beginnings
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born in Edison, New Jersey, on September 29, 1994. Her parents are Nicole and Chris Frangipane. Her mother works as an emergency medical technician (EMT), and her father manages a car dealership. Her mother has Italian and Hungarian roots, while her father is mostly African American with some Irish background. Halsey has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante.
She learned to play the violin, viola, and cello. When she was 14, she started playing the guitar. Growing up, she listened to artists like Alanis Morissette, Justin Bieber, and Brand New. Her family moved often because her parents had many jobs. By the time she was a teenager, she had attended six different schools. She was raised Catholic.
Halsey was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 17. Her mother also has this mood disorder. Halsey has shared that singing and performing help her manage the symptoms. She embraces being bipolar, saying it makes her "really empathetic."
When she was 17, she spent a lot of time near Halsey Street station in Brooklyn. This is where she got her stage name. She said, "Halsey is kind of like a manifestation of all the exaggerated parts of me, so it's like an alter ego." In 2012, she graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey.
After high school, Frangipane tried to go to college but faced financial difficulties. She eventually left college. She lived in New York and sometimes stayed with her maternal grandmother.
Music Career Highlights
Early Music and First EP
Frangipane started writing songs at age 17. In 2012, she began sharing videos on social media sites like YouTube and Tumblr. She became known for a funny song about Taylor Swift's relationship with Harry Styles.
In early 2014, she met a "music guy" at a party. He liked her voice and asked her to work on a song together. The song, "Ghost", was about her ex-boyfriend. She posted it on SoundCloud, and it quickly became popular. Many record labels contacted her. She chose to sign with Astralwerks because they gave her creative freedom.
After this, Frangipane performed acoustic shows using different names. She chose Halsey as her permanent stage name. It's an anagram of her first name, Ashley. It also refers to the Halsey Street station in Brooklyn, where she spent a lot of time. Halsey said music became a way for her to express herself and a form of therapy. She toured with The Kooks in August 2014. Her first EP, Room 93, came out on October 27, 2014. It appeared on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Breakthrough with Badlands
Halsey then started working on her first full album. She performed songs from it at South by Southwest in 2015. She also toured with Young Rising Sons and opened for Imagine Dragons.
Halsey's first studio album, Badlands, was released on August 28, 2015. She described Badlands as a concept album. It tells a story about a dystopian (unpleasant) future society called "The Badlands." This was a way for her to talk about her feelings at the time. Halsey wrote all the songs when she was 19. The album received good reviews from music critics.
Badlands debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the US. It sold 115,000 copies in its first week. The album was also successful in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Halsey promoted the album with her Badlands Tour (2015–16). She also opened for The Weeknd on some of his tour dates.
Badlands was certified two-times Platinum in the US, meaning it sold over 2,000,000 copies. Four singles were released from the album: "Ghost", "New Americana", "Colors", and "Castle". All of these songs were certified Platinum. "New Americana" reached number 60 on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Castle" was re-recorded for the movie The Huntsman: Winter's War. "Gasoline" was not a single but became very popular.

Her second album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, was released on June 2. Halsey said it had more "radio friendly" songs. Like her first album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is a concept album. It tells a story similar to Romeo and Juliet. The album also explores Halsey's bisexuality. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the US and the Canadian Albums Chart. Halsey became the first woman to have a number one album in the US in 2017. Halsey's parents had a big influence on her music taste. Her mother listened to bands like the Cure and Nirvana. Her father listened to hip-hop artists like the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Halsey has said that their musical choices greatly influenced her.
She was also inspired by Matty Healy's lyrics, saying he uses a lot of dialogue and descriptions that create honest images. Halsey has called Panic! at the Disco the band that changed her life. She credits Lady Gaga for helping her be herself. She also loves the band Brand New. Halsey has said that Taylor Swift is a big reason why she always writes her own music. Other artists who have influenced her include Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Christina Aguilera, Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse.
Halsey credits Dolores O'Riordan as her main vocal influence. She also finds inspiration in cinema, mentioning filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino.
Music Style and Themes
Halsey is known for her unique "indie" singing style. She sings with an accent that is different from her speaking voice. Her music is described as pop, electropop, synth-pop, art pop, alternative pop, alternative rock, R&B, indie pop, and alternative R&B.
The New York Times noted that Halsey was part of a group of female pop artists who emerged after Lorde became popular. Billboard said Halsey's vision combines the dark synth sounds of Lorde, the pop energy of Miley Cyrus, and the film noir style of Lana Del Rey.
Halsey's music often focuses on her personal experiences and tells a story. She writes about her relationships and her bisexuality in her songs.
Live Performances
Halsey's live performances are influenced by Adam Lazzara, the lead singer of Taking Back Sunday. She said watching him use the microphone as a prop inspired her.
Activism and Advocacy
During the 2016 presidential election, Halsey supported Bernie Sanders and encouraged her fans to vote. In July 2016, she joined other artists on the charity single "Hands" to honor the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. She also supported Sanders during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries.
Halsey identifies as a feminist. In November 2018, she performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. However, she later criticized the company for not including transgender models.
