Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known by her stage name Halsey, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is famous for her unique singing voice and personal songwriting. Halsey has won many awards, including three Billboard Music Awards and an American Music Award. In 2020, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Halsey grew up in New Jersey and became famous by sharing her music on social media. In 2014, she signed with the record label Astralwerks and released her first collection of songs, an extended play (EP) called Room 93. Her first album, Badlands (2015), was a big success. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S.

In 2016, she was featured on the song "Closer" with The Chainsmokers. The song was a massive hit, reaching number one in the U.S. and many other countries. Her second album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), also went to number one. Her 2020 album, Manic, included the hit single "Without Me", which became her first solo song to top the U.S. charts.

Her fourth album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (2021), had a darker, more industrial sound. After leaving Capitol Records, she signed with Columbia Records and released her fifth album, The Great Impersonator, in 2024. Besides music, Halsey is also known for her work in raising awareness for important causes.

Early Life

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born in Edison, New Jersey, on September 29, 1994. Her mother, Nicole, is an emergency medical technician (EMT), and her father, Chris, manages a car dealership. She has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante. As a child, she learned to play the violin, viola, and cello before picking up the guitar at age 14.

Her family moved often when she was young, so she attended six different schools. In high school, she faced bullying. At 17, she went through a very difficult time that led to her being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This is a condition that can cause very strong shifts in mood and energy. She learned that her mother also has the same condition.

She got her stage name, Halsey, from Halsey Street in Brooklyn, New York. It was a place where she spent a lot of time and started writing music. The name is also an anagram (a word made by rearranging the letters) of her first name, Ashley. After graduating from high school in 2012, she faced financial challenges. For a time, she did not have a stable place to live and sometimes stayed with her grandmother.
