She is known for her unique singing voice and has won several awards. These include three Billboard Music Awards, a Billboard Women in Music Award, and an American Music Award. She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards. In 2020, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Halsey grew up in New Jersey. She first gained attention by sharing her music online. In 2014, she signed with Astralwerks and released her first extended play (EP), Room 93. Her first studio album, Badlands (2015), was very successful. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart and sold millions of copies. Songs like "Colors", "Gasoline", and "New Americana" became popular. "New Americana" was her first song to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2016, Halsey sang with the Chainsmokers on their hit song "Closer". This song was number one in the US and many other countries. Her second album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), had a more radio-friendly sound. It debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Singles like "Now or Never" and "Bad at Love" were big hits. In 2018, her song "Eastside" with Benny Blanco and Khalid also did very well. Later that year, she moved to Capitol Records.

Halsey's third album, Manic (2020), became her best-selling album worldwide. Its main single, "Without Me", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her fourth album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (2021), had a different, darker sound. In 2023, she left Capitol Records and signed with Columbia Records. Her fifth album, The Great Impersonator, was released in 2024. By 2020, Billboard reported that Halsey's albums had sold over one million copies and had over six billion streams in the United States.

Early Life and Beginnings

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born in Edison, New Jersey, on September 29, 1994. Her parents are Nicole and Chris Frangipane. Her mother works as an emergency medical technician (EMT), and her father manages a car dealership. Her mother has Italian and Hungarian roots, while her father is mostly African American with some Irish background. Halsey has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante.

She learned to play the violin, viola, and cello. When she was 14, she started playing the guitar. Growing up, she listened to artists like Alanis Morissette, Justin Bieber, and Brand New. Her family moved often because her parents had many jobs. By the time she was a teenager, she had attended six different schools. She was raised Catholic.

Halsey was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 17. Her mother also has this mood disorder. Halsey has shared that singing and performing help her manage the symptoms. She embraces being bipolar, saying it makes her "really empathetic."

When she was 17, she spent a lot of time near Halsey Street station in Brooklyn. This is where she got her stage name. She said, "Halsey is kind of like a manifestation of all the exaggerated parts of me, so it's like an alter ego." In 2012, she graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey.

After high school, Frangipane tried to go to college but faced financial difficulties. She eventually left college. She lived in New York and sometimes stayed with her maternal grandmother.

Music Career Highlights

Early Music and First EP

Frangipane started writing songs at age 17. In 2012, she began sharing videos on social media sites like YouTube and Tumblr. She became known for a funny song about Taylor Swift's relationship with Harry Styles.

In early 2014, she met a "music guy" at a party. He liked her voice and asked her to work on a song together. The song, "Ghost", was about her ex-boyfriend. She posted it on SoundCloud, and it quickly became popular. Many record labels contacted her. She chose to sign with Astralwerks because they gave her creative freedom.

After this, Frangipane performed acoustic shows using different names. She chose Halsey as her permanent stage name. It's an anagram of her first name, Ashley. It also refers to the Halsey Street station in Brooklyn, where she spent a lot of time. Halsey said music became a way for her to express herself and a form of therapy. She toured with The Kooks in August 2014. Her first EP, Room 93, came out on October 27, 2014. It appeared on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Halsey then started working on her first full album. She performed songs from it at South by Southwest in 2015. She also toured with Young Rising Sons and opened for Imagine Dragons.

Halsey's first studio album, Badlands, was released on August 28, 2015. She described Badlands as a concept album. It tells a story about a dystopian (unpleasant) future society called "The Badlands." This was a way for her to talk about her feelings at the time. Halsey wrote all the songs when she was 19. The album received good reviews from music critics.

Badlands debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the US. It sold 115,000 copies in its first week. The album was also successful in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Halsey promoted the album with her Badlands Tour (2015–16). She also opened for The Weeknd on some of his tour dates.

Badlands was certified two-times Platinum in the US, meaning it sold over 2,000,000 copies. Four singles were released from the album: "Ghost", "New Americana", "Colors", and "Castle". All of these songs were certified Platinum. "New Americana" reached number 60 on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Castle" was re-recorded for the movie The Huntsman: Winter's War. "Gasoline" was not a single but became very popular.

In 2015, Halsey was featured on Justin Bieber's song "The Feeling" from his album Purpose. In February 2016, Halsey partnered with MAC cosmetics to release her own lipstick. It tells a story similar to Romeo and Juliet. The album also explores Halsey's bisexuality. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the US and the Canadian Albums Chart. Halsey became the first woman to have a number one album in the US in 2017. Artistic Style and Influences

Musical Inspirations

Halsey's parents had a big influence on her music taste. Her mother listened to bands like the Cure and Nirvana. Her father listened to hip-hop artists like the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Halsey has said that their musical choices greatly influenced her.

She was also inspired by Matty Healy's lyrics, saying he uses a lot of dialogue and descriptions that create honest images. Halsey has called Panic! at the Disco the band that changed her life. She credits Lady Gaga for helping her be herself. She also loves the band Brand New. Halsey has said that Taylor Swift is a big reason why she always writes her own music. Other artists who have influenced her include Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Christina Aguilera, Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse.

Halsey credits Dolores O'Riordan as her main vocal influence. She also finds inspiration in cinema, mentioning filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino.

Music Style and Themes

Halsey is known for her unique "indie" singing style. She sings with an accent that is different from her speaking voice. Her music is described as pop, electropop, synth-pop, art pop, alternative pop, alternative rock, R&B, indie pop, and alternative R&B.

The New York Times noted that Halsey was part of a group of female pop artists who emerged after Lorde became popular. Billboard said Halsey's vision combines the dark synth sounds of Lorde, the pop energy of Miley Cyrus, and the film noir style of Lana Del Rey.

Halsey's music often focuses on her personal experiences and tells a story. She writes about her relationships and her bisexuality in her songs.

Live Performances

Halsey's live performances are influenced by Adam Lazzara, the lead singer of Taking Back Sunday. She said watching him use the microphone as a prop inspired her.

Activism and Advocacy

During the 2016 presidential election, Halsey supported Bernie Sanders and encouraged her fans to vote. In July 2016, she joined other artists on the charity single "Hands" to honor the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. She also supported Sanders during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries.

Halsey identifies as a feminist. In November 2018, she performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. However, she later criticized the company for not including transgender models. She stated, "as a member of the LGBT+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity." In January 2019, she spoke about the need for more women in music in an interview with Glamour. In April 2019, she was part of the charity single "Earth" to raise awareness about climate change. In May 2020, Halsey joined protests in Los Angeles for racial justice.

In June 2020, she started The Black Creators Fund. This fund helps black creators with financial support, resources, and a platform.

Personal Life

Relationships

From 2015 to 2016, she dated Norwegian producer Lido, who helped produce Badlands. In 2017, she started dating American rapper G-Eazy. They collaborated on the song "Him & I". They broke up in July 2018, and their relationship ended in September. Halsey confirmed that her 2018 song "Without Me" is partly about this relationship. Health Journey

Halsey has been open about her health issues throughout her career.

She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17. She has said that singing and performing help her manage the symptoms. She also shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD in high school and now takes medication for it.

In 2016, Halsey was diagnosed with endometriosis. This condition can cause pain. She believes a miscarriage she had in 2015 was due to her endometriosis. She performed on stage just hours after realizing she was having a miscarriage, because she didn't want to harm her career. She talked about her struggles with endometriosis on the talk show The Doctors in April 2018. She also spoke about the pain at the Blossom Ball, an event for the Endometriosis Foundation of America. She said she wanted to speak out because the media often shows her as perfectly healthy, despite her struggles. In January 2017, she had surgery to try to reduce the pain from the condition.

Halsey is gluten intolerant. In 2019, she shared that she had quit smoking cigarettes after ten years.
