Growing Up
Aria Wells was born in Bermondsey, South London. Her father was an actor, and her mother was from Africa. Aria lived in London for most of her childhood.
Her father helped her discover music and theatre. She also sang in school activities and community events, like the church choir.
Moving to Hastings
When Aria was 12, her parents separated. She and her mother moved to Hastings. Her mother felt the schools in South London were not good at that time.
Aria often visited her father in London during summer holidays. She kept writing her own music and performing. However, she faced bullying and lost her confidence by age 15. She stopped making music and left school early.
At 17, Aria returned to London. She worked at different bars, including a nightclub called Visions in Dalston.
Music Journey
Finding Her Way
Aria Wells saved money from her jobs to travel. She went on trips to California and Peru with her boyfriend. Her stage name, Greentea Peng, came from a box of Green Tea Seng she bought in Peru. She added 'peng' because she used the word often.
Her longest trip was to Tulum, Mexico. She worked at a yoga retreat there. She helped with workshops and classes. Even though she was unsure at first, she started to use the retreat's ideas in her own life. This helped her gain the confidence to make music again.
She also met her current manager, KESH, a UK designer and artist, at a beach.
Starting to Perform
Aria sang the song "Smile" by Lily Allen at an open mic night. A guitarist then asked her to join his band, Los Hedonistas. They played many gigs, covering different songs. Aria earned more money from performing than from her previous jobs.
First Music Releases
After six months in Mexico, Aria returned to London. She met her producer, Earbuds. They started working on her first music collection, called Sensi. She wanted Sensi to show her true feelings.
Her first EP, Sensi, came out in October 2018. People noticed it mixed different music styles like R&B, hip hop, and dub reggae. Soon after, she started working on her next EP, Rising, again with Earbuds. She spent a month in the studio and created 15 songs.
Gaining Popularity
On June 17, 2019, Greentea Peng's live performance of her song "Downers" was uploaded to the popular YouTube channel COLORS. This video helped her reach a much bigger audience. By October, it had over 2.5 million views.
After this success, her music video for "Mister Sun (miss da sun)" was released. It was known for its "dreamlike" and "kaleidoscopic" visuals. In the video, Greentea Peng travels through mirror portals to different places. Her second EP, Rising, was released on November 1, 2019.
