Early Life and Music Beginnings
Sigrid Solbakk Raabe was born in Ålesund, Norway, on September 5, 1996. Her parents are Håkon Raabe and Anette Sølberg Solbakk. She has two older siblings: a brother named Tellef Raabe, who is also a musician, and a sister named Johanne.
Sigrid's first performance was in kindergarten. She cried and had to be taken off the stage. She started playing the piano when she was 7 years old. By age 13, she began singing. At 13, she even performed a song by the band Nirvana called "Smells Like Teen Spirit". When she was young, Sigrid thought about becoming a teacher, lawyer, or journalist. She felt that a music career might be too uncertain.
In her first year of high school, Sigrid realized that music was more than just a hobby. When she was 17, she and her sister Johanne started a band. They named it Sala Says Mhyp after their cat, Sala. After high school, Sigrid moved to Bergen. She wanted to be part of the city's independent music scene. She lived in a shared apartment with her brother and friends. She started studying politics at university. However, she soon left to focus on her music career.
Sigrid's Music Career
When Sigrid was 16, she wrote her first song, "Sun." Her brother, Tellef, who is also a musician, challenged her to write her own song. He wanted her to stop singing only cover versions of Adele songs at his shows. In 2013, she released "Sun" as her very first single. The song was played on Norwegian radio stations. The next year, she signed with Petroleum Records. She also performed at music events like Øyafestivalen.
In 2016, Sigrid wrote the song "Don't Kill My Vibe" with Martin Sjølie. She was inspired by a time when a music producer treated her badly during a songwriting session. When people at Island Records heard the song, they quickly signed her to a music contract. On May 5, 2017, she released her first music collection, an EP, named after the song. This EP became popular in Norway, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In 2017, Sigrid performed at many big music festivals. These included Glastonbury Festival and the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Her song "Don't Kill My Vibe" was also featured in the game The Sims 4: Parenthood in a special game language called Simlish. She also sang a cover of "Everybody Knows" for the 2017 Justice League movie soundtrack.
In January 2018, Sigrid was named the winner of BBC Music Sound of 2018. This award highlights new artists to watch. On February 10, 2018, she was a guest presenter for an episode of The Playlist on CBBC. In the same month, Sigrid won the Newcomer of the Year award at Spellemannprisen, which are like the Norwegian Grammys. On July 11, 2018, her second EP, Raw, was released. It had five songs.
On March 8, 2019, Sigrid's first full album, Sucker Punch, came out. The album had 12 songs, including five that were released before the album. In 2019, Sigrid went on tour with Maroon 5 in Europe. She also opened for George Ezra's tour in the United Kingdom. She also had her own tours in North America and Europe. Sigrid sang the song "Home to You" for The Aeronauts movie soundtrack. In 2019, Forbes magazine listed her in their "30 under 30" for European Entertainment.
In 2020, Sigrid joined many other artists to cover the Foo Fighters song "Times Like These". This was for a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge charity project. It helped raise money during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2021, Sigrid performed in Dingle, Ireland. This was for the TV music show Other Voices.
Sigrid's second album, How to Let Go, was released on May 6, 2022. It has 12 songs.
Artistic Style
Sigrid's songs often explore strong feelings like frustration or sadness. She has said it is easier for her to write about difficult times than about happy ones. For her love songs, Sigrid is inspired by artists like Bonnie Raitt, Coldplay, Adele, Lykke Li, and Robyn.
