Early Life and Music Start
Sigrid Solbakk Raabe was born in Ålesund, Norway. Her parents are Håkon Raabe and Anette Sølberg Solbakk. She has two older siblings. Her brother, Tellef Raabe, is also a musician. Her sister's name is Johanne.
First Performances
Sigrid's very first performance was in kindergarten. She cried and had to be taken off the stage! She started playing the piano when she was 7 years old. By age 13, she began singing. At that age, she even performed a song by the band Nirvana.
Choosing a Path
When she was younger, Sigrid thought about becoming a teacher, lawyer, or journalist. She felt that a music career might be too risky. But in high school, she realized music was more than just a hobby. When she was 17, she and her sister Johanne started a band. They named it Sala Says Mhyp after their cat.
After high school, Sigrid moved to Bergen. This city was known for its indie music scene. She lived with her brother and friends. She started studying politics at university. However, she soon left to focus on her music career.
Sigrid's Music Journey
Early Career (2012–2015)
Sigrid wrote her first song, "Sun," when she was 16. Her brother, Tellef, challenged her to write her own song. He wanted her to stop only singing cover songs by artists like Adele. In 2013, she released "Sun" as her first single. The song was played on Norwegian radio stations. The next year, she signed with Petroleum Records. She also performed at music festivals like Øyafestivalen.
Breaking Through (2017–2020)
In 2016, Sigrid wrote the song "Don't Kill My Vibe" with Martin Sjølie. She was inspired by a time when a music producer was not kind to her. When people at Island Records heard the song, they quickly signed her. On May 5, 2017, she released her first EP, named after the song. This EP became popular in Norway, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
During 2017, Sigrid performed at many big music festivals. These included Glastonbury Festival and Reading and Leeds Festivals. Her song "Don't Kill My Vibe" was even featured in The Sims 4: Parenthood video game. She also sang a cover of "Everybody Knows" for the 2017 Justice League movie soundtrack.
In January 2018, Sigrid was named the winner of BBC Music Sound of 2018. This award highlights new artists to watch. In February 2018, she was a guest on The Playlist for CBBC. She also won the Newcomer of the Year award at the 2018 Spellemannprisen (a big music award in Norway). Her second EP, Raw, which had 5 songs, came out on July 11, 2018.
