Jack's Early Life and Music
Jack Robert Garratt was born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. His mother was a music teacher at a primary school. His father worked as a police officer. Jack grew up in the village of Little Chalfont.
He loved making sounds and seeing how people reacted. His parents encouraged him to take music lessons. This helped him develop his talent. Jack wrote his first song when he was 12 years old. He learned to play many instruments. These included the guitar, drums, piano, harmonica, mandolin, trombone, and ukulele. He went to St Clement Danes School and later to the University of Roehampton in London. He left university after his first year.
Jack's Music Career
Junior Eurovision Experience
In September 2005, Jack took part in the UK selection for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2005. This contest was held in Belgium. His song, "The Girl," finished last with 13 points. Jack later said that he tried to achieve something as a musician for the first time. But his reasons were not right. He did it more for attention than for a love of music.
Starting His Music Journey
Jack Garratt first went to university to become a teacher. He signed with an independent record label. He started working on an album called Nickel and Dime. This album featured acoustic blues music. His music was played on BBC Three Counties Radio in March 2012. This was part of a show called BBC Introducing.
He stopped working on the album because he was not proud of the songs. He felt he was performing for people's reactions, not because he loved the music. He left university and felt very lost. He decided to write music with more respect and honesty. He spent a year writing new songs.
Success with Phase
On October 28, 2014, Jack released his first extended play (EP) called Remnants. He also released a remix EP called Remnix. On November 28, 2014, he released the song "The Love You're Given." His song "Worry" was played a lot on BBC Radio 1.
He was a main performer on the BBC Introducing stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. He also performed at the Lost Village Festival in Lincoln in 2016. On September 27, 2015, he played at the Apple Music Festival in London. Jack also supported the band Mumford and Sons on their UK tour in 2015. He played at 13 shows across the UK and Ireland.
Jack won the Critics' Choice category at the 2016 Brit Awards. He also won the BBC Sound of 2016 poll. He was on MTV's Brand New 2016 list. His first studio album, Phase, came out on February 19, 2016. In February 2016, he performed his song "Worry" on the Italian TV show "Che tempo che fa."
Taking a Break and Love, Death and Dancing
After touring for Phase ended in late 2016, Jack tried to record a new album. But he decided to scrap it. He said it was "trash" and "awful." He took time off to deal with anxiety and self-doubt. These feelings came from the attention and success of his first album.
Later, he met record producer Jacknife Lee. They started working on new music together. On February 6, 2020, his new song "Time" was first played on Annie Mac's Future Sounds show on BBC Radio 1. This song is the first track on his EP Love, Death and Dancing (Vol. 1), released on the same day. This EP is part of Jack's second album, Love, Death and Dancing, which came out on June 12, 2020.
New Music: Hands Go Up and Pillars
In 2022, Jack released a new song called "Just How I Like It." He followed this with "No Good Without You" and "Hands Go Up" in 2023. All three songs are on the Hands Go Up EP, which was released in May 2023. In March 2023, Jack performed live in several UK cities. He also played at various festivals later that year.
In 2025, Jack Garratt announced his third studio album, Pillars. It is set to be released in August 2025. Three songs from this album have already been released: "Catherine Wheel," "Ready! Steady! Go!," and "Higher."
