Early Life and Education
Beatrice Laus was born in Iloilo City, Philippines, on June 3, 2000. When she was three years old, she moved to the United Kingdom with her parents. She grew up in West London.
As a child, she listened to Filipino pop music and rock music from the 1990s. When she was a teenager, she enjoyed indie rock artists like Karen O and Alex G.
She went to Sacred Heart High School, an all-girls Catholic school. She later attended Hammersmith Academy. At 17, she left school due to low grades and "misfit behavior."
Laus played the violin for seven years. She got her first guitar when she was 17. She learned to play by watching videos on YouTube. She was inspired to start making her own music by Kimya Dawson and the music from the movie Juno.
Career Highlights
2017–2019: First Songs and EPs
The first song Beabadoobee wrote on her guitar was "Coffee." She chose her stage name, Beabadoobee, as a fun name for her social media account. Her friend and producer, Oscar Lang, suggested she use it when uploading "Coffee."
She released "Coffee" and a cover of Karen O's "The Moon Song" in September 2017. "Coffee" quickly gained many views online. This caught the attention of Dirty Hit Records, and she signed with them in April 2018.
After signing, she released her first EP, Lice, in March 2018. Her second EP, Patched Up, followed in December 2018. In January 2019, NME magazine named Beabadoobee one of their "essential new artists." She then released her third EP, Loveworm. An acoustic version, Loveworm (Bedroom Sessions), came out in July 2019.
In September 2019, Beabadoobee went on her first tour, supporting Clairo. She then released her fourth EP, Space Cadet, in October 2019. She was featured on the front cover of NME magazine. In December 2019, she was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Brit Awards. She also released two songs for Spotify, including a cover of "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds.
2020–2021: "Death Bed" and First Album
In February 2020, Beabadoobee performed at the NME Awards after winning the Radar Award. She also supported the 1975 on their Music for Cars Tour in the UK.
A part of Beabadoobee's 2017 song "Coffee" was used in a 2019 song by Canadian rapper Powfu, called "Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head)". This song became very popular on TikTok in early 2020. It was Beabadoobee's first song to appear on music charts around the world. By April 2020, it was in the Top 5 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. It also earned many awards for its sales. Beabadoobee said she was surprised by its popularity but grateful for the opportunities it brought.
Beabadoobee announced her first full album, Fake It Flowers, and released its first song, "Care," on July 14, 2020. She released more songs from the album, including "Sorry," "Worth It," "How Was Your Day?," and "Together." The album was released on October 16, 2020, and was highly praised. It reached number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. In 2021, she toured the UK and Ireland to support the album.
On March 24, 2021, Beabadoobee released the song "Last Day on Earth." This song was co-written and produced by Matty Healy and George Daniel from the 1975. She announced that this song was from her EP Our Extended Play, which she wrote with her labelmates.
2022–Present: Beatopia and This Is How Tomorrow Moves
Her second album, Beatopia, was announced on March 23, 2022. It was released on July 15, 2022, through Dirty Hit. The album featured the popular song "The Perfect Pair."
In January 2023, Beabadoobee shared a short clip of a new song on TikTok. The song, "Glue Song", quickly became popular, especially among couples. It was officially released on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2023. Another version featuring Clairo was released on April 17, 2023, and charted in several countries. This collaboration showed her music style growing, mixing pop with personal lyrics.
Starting in March 2023, Beabadoobee toured in many European countries. She also performed as an opening act for twelve shows on the US leg of Taylor Swift's 2023 The Eras Tour.
On June 29, 2023, Beabadoobee announced she had to cancel her European tour due to an illness. She then released a new song, "The Way Things Go", on July 19, 2023. Beabadoobee also released a song with Laufey, called "A Night to Remember," on October 20, 2023.
Her third album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, was released on August 9, 2024. It became her first album to reach number 1 in the UK.
Musical Influences
Beabadoobee has said that artists like the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Mac DeMarco, the Moldy Peaches, Pavement, Mazzy Star, Simon and Garfunkel, the Sundays, and Daniel Johnston have influenced her music. She even has a tattoo of artwork from one of Daniel Johnston's album covers.
In an interview in 2018, she mentioned that she hopes to create music for movies in the future. She said that movie soundtracks have greatly inspired her own music. Her style is also influenced by 80s alternative rock and shoegaze bands such as the Cure, the Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, and the Smashing Pumpkins.
Personal Life
Beatrice Laus can understand the Philippine languages Hiligaynon and Tagalog. However, she has said that she cannot speak them fluently.
