Momodou Lamin Jallow (born on 26 October 1996), known as J Hus, is a British rapper and singer. He is famous for helping to create a music style called Afroswing. This style mixes African sounds with rap and dancehall. J Hus is signed to Black Butter Records.
He became well-known in 2015 with his song "Dem Boy Paigon". His song "Did You See" was a big hit, reaching number nine in the UK. In 2017, he released his first album, Common Sense. This album was loved by critics and reached number six on the UK album charts. After facing a legal issue in 2018, he returned to music in April 2019. He made a surprise appearance at a concert by Canadian rapper Drake in London.
In January 2020, J Hus released his second album, Big Conspiracy. This album featured popular artists like Koffee, Burna Boy, and Ella Mai. Big Conspiracy became his first album to reach number one in the UK. In June 2023, he released "Who Told You" with Drake, which became his highest-charting song, reaching number two. Early life and beginnings
J Hus was born in London, England. He grew up in the Stratford area of the city. His family comes from Gambia. His mother moved to England when she was 25 years old. J Hus was raised as a Muslim. His family has Fula and Wolof heritage.
When he was younger, J Hus wanted to be an actor. But by the time he was around 15 or 16, his focus changed. He was expelled from school after getting into some trouble. In September 2014, after spending time in prison, his childhood friend Moe suggested he try music. Moe became his manager, and they started a management company.
Music career
Starting out (2014–2016)
J Hus began his music journey by recording freestyles. These are songs made up on the spot. He shared them online on platforms like #StreetHeat and GRM Daily. He then released songs like "#Rated" and a remix of Kojo Funds' "Want From Me". These songs helped him get noticed.
His song "Dem Boy Paigon" was a big step for him. It mixed Afro-beat sounds with rap lyrics. This made it popular for dancing. He followed this with "No Lie" and a session for SB: TV. In 2015, he teamed up with MoStack for a "Westwood Crib Session". Later that year, he released "Lean & Bop," which was streamed over 10 million times. In 2016, J Hus released the song "Friendly." It was nominated for an award at the MOBO Awards. He also released "Playing Sports" and appeared on MoStack's "Liar Liar" (Remix). His song "Solo One" was featured on the Brotherhood film soundtrack.
The year 2017 was a big one for J Hus. He was featured on songs by other famous rappers. These included Nines' "High Roller" and Stormzy's "Bad Boys." Hours after his release in April 2019, J Hus made a surprise return to the stage. He joined Drake at his concert at O2 Arena in London. In November, he released the song "Must Be." He then released "No Denying" and "Repeat." In December 2019, J Hus announced he would not tour for a few years. He also said he wanted to work with Burna Boy and 21 Savage after his next album.
J Hus' second album, Big Conspiracy, came out in January 2020. It became his first album to reach number one in the UK. In July 2022, he was featured on Burna Boy's song "Cloak & Dagger." In May 2023, he released "It's Crazy," his first song as a lead artist since 2020. He followed this with "Who Told You" featuring Drake in June. This song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. On June 29, he announced his third album, Beautiful and Brutal Yard, which was released on July 14. The album's trailer was narrated by Idris Elba. The day before the album came out, he released "Militerian" with Naira Marley. Beautiful and Brutal Yard debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, making it his second chart-topping album.
