Corinne Jacqueline Bailey Rae is a talented British singer and songwriter. She was born on February 26, 1979. Many people know her best for her popular song "Put Your Records On" from 2006.
In 2006, music critics predicted she would be a big new artist. Her first album, Corinne Bailey Rae, came out in February 2006. It quickly became number one in the UK. This made her only the fourth British female artist to have her first album reach the top spot. The album sold over four million copies worldwide.
Corinne Bailey Rae received many awards and nominations for her music. In 2007, she was nominated for three Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards. She also won two MOBO Awards. Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Corinne Bailey Rae was born in Leeds, England. Her father is from Saint Kitts and Nevis, and her mother is English. She is the oldest of three sisters. Her sister, Rhea Bailey, is an actress. Corinne went to Allerton High School in Leeds.
She started her music journey at school. She first learned to play the classical violin. Later, she began to focus on singing. She sang in a church choir, which helped her explore different types of music. The church youth leader even helped her buy her first guitar. As a teenager, she was inspired by rock artists like Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin.
Corinne Bailey Rae studied English language and literature at the University of Leeds. She graduated from the university in 2000.

Starting Her Music Journey (1998–2003)
Corinne Bailey Rae first formed an indie band called Helen. The band was inspired by other female-led rock groups. They played many shows in Leeds. Even though they didn't get a UK record deal, a US heavy metal label, Roadrunner Records, showed interest in 1998. However, the band broke up before signing.
After getting married, Corinne started working on solo music. She moved away from rock and explored a more "soulful" sound. She worked with a funk group called the New Mastersounds on a song called "Your Love Is Mine" in 2003. The next year, she collaborated with another Leeds group, Home cut Directive.
First Album Success (2004–2008)
In 2004, Corinne Bailey Rae signed with Global Talent Publishing. She then worked with Mark Hill on his album better luck next time. Their song "Young and Foolish" helped major record labels notice her.
Her first single, "Like a Star", came out in November 2005. Her first album, Corinne Bailey Rae, was released in February 2006. It quickly became number one in the UK. It also reached number four on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 1.9 million copies in the United States.

In February 2016, Corinne Bailey Rae announced her third album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers. It was released in May 2016. The album reached number two on Billboard's R&B chart. Songs like "Been to the Moon" and "Green Aphrodisiac" were featured on NPR's list of favorite albums.
The album was recorded in Leeds and Los Angeles. It featured collaborations with many talented musicians. In 2016, NASA chose her for their "Destination: Jupiter" campaign. President Barack Obama also included her song "Green Aphrodisiac" on his Spotify playlist.
In 2017, Corinne Bailey Rae recorded "The Scientist" (originally by Coldplay) for a film soundtrack. In 2019, she performed at the SummerStage festival in Central Park. She also toured the UK, Europe, and the US. She contributed a song to a Tom Waits tribute album.
On January 7, 2023, Corinne Bailey Rae performed at the opening of Leeds 2023. This was a special year of culture organized by her home city.

Many of Corinne Bailey Rae's songs have been used in films and TV shows. "Like a Star" has been featured in movies like 27 Dresses and Nancy Drew. It also appeared in TV series such as Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds.
Her song "Put Your Records On" was in an episode of the series By Any Means. Six songs from her first album were included in the soundtrack for the film Venus. "I'd Like To" was featured in the movie He's Just Not That Into You. Her song "Lucky One" is the theme song for the TV show Stan Lee's Lucky Man.
Corinne Bailey Rae is also an ambassador for charities. She supports Cord, a charity that helps people in need. Personal Life
While at university, Corinne worked at a local jazz club. There, she met musician Jason Rae. They got married in 2001, and she changed her name to Bailey Rae. Jason Rae was a saxophone player. He played with his wife and other artists like Amy Winehouse.
Sadly, Jason Rae passed away in 2008. Corinne Bailey Rae used her feelings of grief and loss to create music for her album The Sea.
In 2013, Corinne Bailey Rae married her longtime friend, Steve Brown. He is a producer and jazz musician. The couple has two daughters and lives in Leeds.
