Corinne Jacqueline Bailey Rae (born 26 February 1979) is a British singer and songwriter. She is famous for her 2006 song "Put Your Records On".
In 2006, music critics predicted she would be a big new artist. Her first album, Corinne Bailey Rae, came out in February 2006. It was the fourth time a British female artist's first album reached number one. This album sold over four million copies worldwide.
Corinne Bailey Rae was nominated for many awards in 2007, including three Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards. She won two MOBO Awards. In 2008, she won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. This was for her work on Herbie Hancock's album River: The Joni Letters.
Her second album, The Sea, was released in January 2010. She took a break for almost three years before this album. It was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. In 2012, she won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance. This was for her cover of the Bob Marley and the Wailers song "Is This Love".
On 26 February 2016, Corinne Bailey Rae announced her third album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers. It was released on 13 May 2016. This album reached number two on Billboard magazine's R&B chart.

Early life
Corinne Bailey Rae was born in Leeds, England. Her father is from Saint Kitts and Nevis. Her mother, Linda, is English. Her parents separated when she was a child. Corinne is the oldest of three daughters. Her sister, Rhea Bailey, is an actress.
Corinne started her music journey at school. She first learned to play the classical violin. Later, she started singing. She sang in a Plymouth Brethren church. Then she moved to a Baptist church. The youth leader there also helped rock bands.
The young people at the church wrote their own worship songs. They also sang covers of songs by Primal Scream. Corinne recorded two albums with the youth group, called "Revive." Singing in church helped her discover more music styles. She loved making music even more when the youth leader helped her buy her first guitar. As a teenager, she was inspired by Lenny Kravitz. She also explored rock music by listening to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.
Corinne Bailey Rae studied English language and literature at the University of Leeds. She finished her degree in 2000.
Music career
1998–2003: Starting Out
Corinne Bailey Rae formed an indie band called Helen. They were inspired by bands like Veruca Salt and L7. She wanted to be like the women she saw playing guitars. The band played many shows in Leeds. They almost got a deal with a heavy metal record label in the US. But the deal fell through when the bassist became pregnant. The band then broke up. Corinne was very disappointed.
After she got married, Corinne started working on solo music. This time, her music was more "soulful." She worked with a Leeds-based funk band called the New Mastersounds. She sang on their song "Your Love Is Mine" in 2003. The next year, she worked with another Leeds group, Home cut Directive. She sang on their song "Come the Revolution."
2004–2008: Corinne Bailey Rae Album
In 2004, Corinne Bailey Rae signed with Global Talent Publishing. Then, Craig David's mentor, Mark Hill, asked her to sing on his new album. Their song, "Young and Foolish," came out in April 2005. This song helped major record labels notice Corinne.
Corinne Bailey Rae released her first song, "Like a Star", in November 2005. Her first album, Corinne Bailey Rae, came out in February 2006. It went straight to number one in the UK. It also reached the top ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album stayed on the chart for 71 weeks. It sold 1.9 million copies in the United States alone.
"Like a Star" became popular in the UK and US. Her next song, "Put Your Records On", became her biggest hit. It reached number two in the UK. "Trouble Sleeping" also made it into the top forty. In mid-2006, Corinne went on her first international tour. She toured Europe and North America with R&B singer John Legend. They played 55 shows, including Rock in Rio Lisboa 2 and Live Earth festivals.
By April 2006, her album was certified 2x platinum in the UK. In September 2006, she won two awards at the UK's MOBO Awards. She won "Best UK Newcomer" and "Best UK Female." Corinne also recorded a live session at Abbey Road Studios in July 2006.
Corinne Bailey Rae was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 2006. She sang "Put Your Records On" and "Like a Star." She also appeared on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In 2006, she performed on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.
She received three nominations at the 2007 Grammy Awards. These included "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" for "Put Your Records On." She was also nominated for "Best New Artist." During the show, she performed "Like a Star." She also sang with John Legend and John Mayer.
In 2007, Corinne sang "One Night (of Sin)" for a tribute album to Fats Domino. She also recorded John Lennon's "I'm Losing You" for Amnesty International. This song was on a 2007 John Lennon tribute album. In July 2007, Corinne performed at the UK Live Earth concert in London.
In 2008, "Like a Star" was nominated for a Grammy for "Song of the Year." Corinne won two Grammys for her work on River: The Joni Letters. She won "Album of the Year" and "Best Contemporary Jazz Album." She also recorded a live session of "River" with Herbie Hancock at Abbey Road Studios.
During her American and European tour, Corinne recorded her first DVD. It was called Live in London & New York. The DVD was filmed in London, and the bonus CD was recorded in New York.
2009–2011: The Sea and The Love EP
Corinne Bailey Rae released her album The Sea on 26 January 2010. This was four years after her first album. The first song from the album, "I'd Do It All Again", was first played on TV in November 2009. The album's second song, "Paris Nights and New York Mornings," was released in February.
Around the time of her second album, Corinne did many shows. She went on her second world tour, The Sea Tour, with 82 concerts. The tour visited the UK, Europe, the US, Brazil, Japan, and other countries. It started in London in February 2010 and ended in Korea in March 2011. Her summer concert in London sold out.
In December 2009, Corinne recorded a live show in New York City. It was shown on the US TV program Live From the Artists Den in 2010.
On 2 June 2010, Corinne sang "Blackbird" with Herbie Hancock. This was at a concert honoring Paul McCartney at the White House.
On 25 January 2011, Corinne released an EP called The Love EP. It had five cover songs about love. These included Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and Bob Marley's "Is This Love". The EP reached number 86 on the Billboard 200 chart. The first song, "Is This Love", won "Best R&B Performance" at the 54th Grammy Awards.
Corinne Bailey Rae appeared as a musical guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in October 2010. She sang the Bob Marley song "Is This Love".
In July 2011, she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leeds. This is where she had studied before.
In 2013, Corinne Bailey Rae moved from Capitol Records to Virgin Records. This happened because of changes in their parent company.
2016–2019: The Heart Speaks in Whispers and Tours
On 14 February 2016, Corinne Bailey Rae announced her return to music. She shared a short clip of her new song. On 26 February, she announced her third album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers. It was released on 13 May 2016. The first song from the album was "Been to the Moon".
The Heart Speaks in Whispers reached number two on Billboard's R&B chart. The album was recorded in her studio in Leeds and in Los Angeles. Corinne co-produced the album with Steve Brown.
Corinne Bailey Rae was chosen by NASA for their "Destination: Jupiter" campaign. This was when the Juno spacecraft entered Jupiter's orbit in July 2016. She also represented Europe for the International Olympic Committee's campaign. She performed at many festivals, including Glastonbury. She was also a special guest for Stevie Wonder's concert in London.
In November 2016, Corinne joined other artists to honor Smokey Robinson. She sang "Ooo Baby Baby" at his award ceremony in Washington D.C.
In 2017, Corinne Bailey Rae recorded "The Scientist". This song was originally by Coldplay. It was used for the opening of the film Fifty Shades Darker. The song was also on the film's soundtrack.
In 2019, Corinne Bailey Rae performed at the SummerStage festival in Central Park, New York. She toured the UK, Europe, and the US that year.
Corinne was asked to contribute to a Tom Waits tribute album in late 2019. She chose to record "Jersey Girl". This song is also known for a cover by Bruce Springsteen.
2023–present: Black Rainbows
Corinne Bailey Rae performed at the opening of Leeds 2023 on 7 January 2023. This was a year-long cultural event in her home city.
On 19 June 2023, Corinne announced Black Rainbows. This was her first album in seven years. The album was inspired by her visits to the Stony Island Arts Bank. This is a place in Chicago with a collection of Black art and culture. The album was released on 15 September 2023.
Other projects
Her song "Like a Star" has been used in many films and TV shows. These include Dynasty, 27 Dresses, Grey's Anatomy, and Criminal Minds.
"Put Your Records On" appeared in an episode of the series By Any Means.
In the film Venus, six of her songs were on the soundtrack. These included "I'd Like To" and "Put Your Records On."
The song "I'd Like To" was also in the movie He's Just Not That Into You (2009). It was also heard in an episode of CSI:NY. Her song "Lucky One" is the main theme for the 2016 TV show Stan Lee's Lucky Man in the UK.
Corinne Bailey Rae is a special ambassador for the charity Cord. She also works as an ambassador for Pump Aid. This charity helps with water and sanitation. In September 2012, she was part of a campaign called "30 Songs/30 Days." This supported a project about helping women worldwide.
Personal life
While at university, Corinne worked at a local jazz club. There, she met Jason Rae, a musician from Scotland. They married in 2001 when she was 22. She then changed her name to Bailey Rae. Jason Rae (1976–2008) played saxophone in a band called Haggis Horns. He also recorded music with Corinne and other artists.
Jason Rae passed away in March 2008.
In 2013, Corinne Bailey Rae married her longtime friend, Steve Brown. He is a producer and jazz musician. The couple have two daughters. They live in Leeds.
