Plot Summary: Nancy's California Mystery

Nancy Drew, a clever young detective, moves with her dad, Carson Drew, from their quiet town to sunny California. Her dad wants her to act like a normal teenager. He hopes she will stop looking for mysteries to solve.

But Nancy has a secret reason for choosing their new house. It's famous for an unsolved mystery! A movie star named Dehlia Draycott died there a long time ago. Nancy can't resist trying to figure out what happened.

Nancy finds it hard to fit in at her new school. She wears old-fashioned clothes and penny loafers. Only a younger boy named Corky becomes her friend. Corky's older sister and her friends often tease Nancy.

As Nancy secretly looks for clues, she learns more about Dehlia Draycott. She discovers that Dehlia had a child named Jane Brighton. Jane is supposed to inherit everything from Dehlia. But Dehlia's will has disappeared! Nancy contacts a lawyer, Dashiel Biedermeyer, to help with the case.

Meanwhile, Nancy's good friend, Ned Nickerson, visits from River Heights. Ned's visit is an early birthday surprise for Nancy. Corky gets a little jealous of Nancy and Ned's close friendship. He tries to get Nancy's attention.

As Nancy gets closer to solving the mystery, dangerous things start to happen. Someone does not want her to find the truth. One day, Jane Brighton arrives at Nancy's house very upset. Jane's daughter has been taken away from her.

Nancy watches an old Dehlia Draycott movie. She suddenly realizes that Dehlia hid her will in a prop from one of her last films! Nancy finds the will. But then, she is taken by people working for the villain.

Nancy manages to escape with the will. However, she gets into a car crash. Her dad arrives and wants to know what's going on. After Nancy explains her detective work, Biedermeyer offers them a ride home. He says he needs to finish the paperwork for Jane's inheritance.

Nancy realizes that Biedermeyer might be involved. He could lose a lot of money if Jane gets the will. When he questions Nancy about the will, she jumps out of the car. Biedermeyer catches her and threatens her. Nancy asks him why he was trying to hide Dehlia's will. He says Dehlia wanted to leave her money to her caretaker, Leshing, instead of him.

Nancy escapes again but is cornered. Luckily, Leshing arrives and helps her. Nancy reveals that she secretly recorded Biedermeyer's confession. The police arrive and arrest Biedermeyer. Nancy then tells Leshing that Jane is his daughter.

With the will found, Jane gets her inheritance. She is able to get her daughter back. Jane decides to turn the Draycott mansion into a home for single mothers.

Back in River Heights, Nancy visits Ned. He is fixing her car. They share a sweet moment. Soon after, Nancy gets a phone call about a new mystery. This time, it's all the way in Scotland!
