Tate Buckley Donovan (born September 25, 1963) is an American actor, comedian, and director for television. He is famous for his roles as Tom Shayes in the TV show Damages and Jimmy Cooper in The O.C.. Many people also know him as the voice of the main character in Disney's 1997 animated movie Hercules. He also voiced Hercules in the TV series and some Kingdom Hearts video games.

Donovan has also appeared in movies like Love Potion No. 9 with Sandra Bullock. He had important roles in films such as Good Night, and Good Luck and the Oscar-winning movie Argo. On TV, he played Brian Sanders in Hostages and Mark Boudreau in 24: Live Another Day. He was also a guest star in many other TV shows, including Friends, where he played Joshua Burgin. He even won an Emmy Award for producing a series called 30 for 30 Shorts.

Early life and education

Tate Donovan was born on September 25, 1963, in Tenafly, New Jersey. He was the youngest of six children. His father, John Timothy Donovan, was a surgeon, and his mother, Eileen Frances, was of Irish background. Tate went to Dwight-Englewood School and then Tenafly High School. Later, he studied at the University of Southern California. He started appearing on television when he was a teenager.

Acting career

Film roles

Tate Donovan's first movie roles included Kevin Donaldson in SpaceCamp (1986) and Paul Matthews in Love Potion No. 9 (1992). He became widely known for voicing the hero in Disney's animated movie Hercules in 1997.

He also played Jesse Zousmer in the movie Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), which was nominated for Best Picture. In 2007, Donovan appeared in the film Nancy Drew alongside Emma Roberts. A few years later, he played Bob Anders in the Oscar-winning movie Argo (2012). In 2019, he played Doug Weston in the musical film Rocketman.

Television roles and directing

Donovan played Joshua Burgin, a character who dated Rachel Green, for several episodes of Friends. He also played Jimmy Cooper in the popular TV show The O.C. from 2003 to 2006. From 2007 to 2010, he starred as Tom Shayes in the series Damages.

In 2005, Tate Donovan started directing TV episodes. He directed an episode of The O.C. and later directed episodes for shows like Medium, Nip/Tuck, Weeds, and Gossip Girl. He also directed two episodes of Glee. From 2018 to 2020, Donovan played James MacGyver, the main character's father, in the CBS show MacGyver.

Stage performances

Tate Donovan has also performed in many plays. He acted on Broadway in plays like Picnic and Amy's View with Judi Dench. He has also appeared in several Off-Broadway productions, including Lobby Hero. He performed in Good People with Frances McDormand in 2011.

Other projects

Donovan is also a musician. He played with an Irish band called the McGuffins and released an album with them. He plays the bodhrán (an Irish drum) and the fiddle. Since 2011, he has also done voice work for radio and video ads for PNC Financial Services. He also volunteers with the Young Storytellers Program, which helps young people develop their writing skills.

Personal life

Tate Donovan was in relationships with actresses Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston before he got married. He married writer Corinne Kingsbury in 2005, but they divorced in 2008. He later married Corry Scheuerman in 2015.
