Friends is a very popular American comedy TV show. It was on television from September 22, 1994, to May 8, 2004. The show is about six young adult friends. They live in Manhattan, New York City. The main characters are Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey.

Friends was loved by many people during its time on TV. It is still one of the most famous sitcoms ever made. A sitcom is a comedy show that follows the same characters in different funny situations. The series won many awards. It was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards. TV Guide magazine said it was one of the 50 greatest TV shows of all time.

The show was made by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions. This company worked with Warner Bros. Television. David Crane, Marta Kauffman, and Kevin Bright were the first main producers. Other producers joined later on. There were 236 episodes in total. There was also a spin-off show called Joey.

Meet the Main Friends

This section introduces the six main characters of the show. They are the heart of Friends.

Monica Geller

Monica Elizabeth Geller (Courteney Cox) is Ross's sister. She loves to keep things very neat and organized. She is also a great chef. Later in the series, Monica marries Chandler. In the final episode, they adopt two babies named Jack and Erica.

Chandler Bing

Chandler Muriel Bing (Matthew Perry) is known for his great sense of humor. He often makes jokes to deal with uncomfortable situations. At the start of the show, he was not sure about serious relationships. But he later falls in love with Monica and they get married.

Joey Tribbiani

Joey Francis Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) is a kind-hearted but sometimes silly actor. He tries hard to become famous. He gets a big role in a soap opera called Days Of Our Lives. Joey stays on this show until Friends ends. After Friends, Joey got his own spin-off show called Joey.

Rachel Green

Rachel Karen Green (Jennifer Aniston) starts the show by leaving her wedding. She moves to New York to live with Monica. Rachel changes a lot during the series. She goes from being a spoiled girl to a strong, independent woman. She has a famous on-and-off relationship with Ross. They have a daughter together named Emma.

Ross Geller

Dr. Ross Eustace Geller (David Schwimmer) is a paleontologist. This means he studies dinosaurs and ancient life. He has had a crush on Rachel since he was 15. Their relationship is a big part of the show. Ross has been married three times. He has two children: Ben from his first marriage, and Emma with Rachel. At the end of the show, it seems he and Rachel are back together.

Janice

Janice (Maggie Wheeler) is Chandler's on-and-off girlfriend. She has a very unique, loud voice. Her most famous phrase is "Oh - My - God!".

Gunther

Gunther (James Michael Tyler) works at the coffee shop called 'Central Perk'. This is where the friends often hang out. He has bright blonde hair. Gunther is secretly in love with Rachel throughout the show. Rachel only finds out in the very last episode.

Mike

Mike (Paul Rudd) becomes one of Phoebe's main boyfriends. They meet when Joey tries to set Phoebe up on a blind date. Mike and Phoebe fall in love and eventually get married. In the final episode, it is hinted that they will have a baby together.

Jack and Judy Geller

Jack Geller (Elliott Gould) and Judy Geller (Christina Pickles) are the parents of Ross and Monica. They are also the grandparents of Ben and Emma. They often visit their children and add to the family humor.

The producers wanted Courteney Cox (pictured) to portray Rachel, and Jennifer Aniston as Monica; However, Cox and Aniston disagreed, so Cox was cast as Monica and Aniston as Rachel
The cast became very emotional while filming the final episode. Jennifer Aniston explained, "We're like very delicate china right now, and we're speeding toward a brick wall."

After filming on the finale concluded, Stage 24 at Warner Bros Studios, where Friends had been filmed since Season 2, was renamed "The Friends Stage".
LeBlanc hoped that by having his own show, Joey, "probably the least evolved character" on Friends, would become more developed.
