Ross's Life and Work
Ross is a paleontologist, which means he studies ancient life, like dinosaurs. He earned a special degree called a Ph.D. His feelings for Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) started when they were in high school. Their relationship is a big part of the Friends story.
Growing Up and Family
Ross grew up on Long Island. He is the older brother of Monica Geller (Courteney Cox). Their parents are Jack (Elliott Gould) and Judy Geller (Christina Pickles). Ross and Monica are Jewish. Ross likes to teach his son, Ben, about their family's faith.
Ross was single at the start of the show. Later, he dated Rachel, but they broke up. After that, Ross married Emily Waltham (Helen Baxendale). This marriage did not last long. In a later season, Ross and Rachel got married in Las Vegas. That marriage also ended. Ross gets married and divorced three times during the show.
Sibling Rivalry with Monica
Ross and Monica often compete with each other. When they were kids, they played a family football game every Thanksgiving. This game ended when Monica accidentally broke Ross's nose.
They also had a dance they made up called "The Routine." They performed it as adults on a TV show for New Year's Eve. As children, Monica felt their parents liked Ross more. But as they grew up, they became very close friends. Their competition still showed sometimes, like in the episode "The One with the Football."
Friends and Relationships
Ross often has funny disagreements with Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow). Ross is very logical, and Phoebe is very free-spirited. They argue about things like evolution and whether Phoebe's mother came back as a cat.
Since college, Ross's best friend has been Chandler Bing. Chandler later married Monica, making them brothers-in-law. Even though they are best friends, Chandler sometimes gets annoyed by Ross's nerdy behavior.
Ross is also good friends with Rachel Green. He had a crush on her since high school. Rachel used to see him as Monica's "geeky older brother." When they met again years later, Ross's feelings for her came back. They became close and had an on-and-off relationship throughout the show. In the last season, Rachel tells him he is very important to her.
He is also close friends with Joey Tribbiani. Ross often helps Joey with his acting auditions. Ross tries to help his friends when they are having a hard time.
Ross's Children
Ross has two children:
- Ross's son, Ben, was born at the end of Season 1. His mother is Carol.
- Ross's daughter, Emma Geller-Greene, was born at the end of Season 8. Her mother is Rachel.
Fun Facts About Ross
Ross sometimes makes funny claims. He says he "gave up a career in basketball" to study dinosaurs. He also claims that the ideas for famous movies like Jurassic Park were stolen from him. Ross also loves music and used to play the keyboard for hours. He even claims he came up with the "Got Milk?" slogan!
In the first season of the show, Ross had a pet monkey named Marcel. Marcel was actually played by a female monkey named Katie.
