Caroline Sidney Aaron (born on August 7, 1952) is an American actress. She is famous for her roles in many movies directed by Mike Nichols, Nora Ephron, and Woody Allen. She is also well-known for playing Shirley Maisel in the TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Early Life and Education
Caroline Aaron was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother, Nina Abady, was a civil rights activist. She was from Alabama and had a Syrian Jewish background. Caroline's mother worked hard to support her three children after Caroline's father passed away. Her father was of Lebanese-Jewish descent. Caroline's older sister, Josephine Abady, was a theater director and producer. She passed away in 2002.
Caroline went to American University in Washington, D.C.. There, she studied performing arts. She also learned acting at HB Studio in New York City.
Acting Career
Caroline Aaron has had many roles in popular movies. She worked with famous directors like Mike Nichols in Heartburn (1986) and Primary Colors (1998). She also appeared in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Alice (1990), and Deconstructing Harry (1997). You might also remember her from Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
She also acted in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Stanley Tucci's Big Night (1996). More recently, she was in the comedy movies 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014).
On television, Caroline has made guest appearances in many shows. These include Wings, Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Desperate Housewives. She also appeared in Transparent, Madam Secretary, and The Good Fight.
Caroline has also performed on Broadway, which is New York City's famous theater district. Her Broadway plays include Relatively Speaking, I Hate Hamlet, and Social Security.
From 2017 to 2023, she was a regular cast member on the popular show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. In this show, she played a funny Jewish mother, Shirley Maisel. Her performance helped the cast win two Screen Actors Guild Awards for best comedy ensemble.
Besides acting, Caroline Aaron also teaches acting. She is a guest instructor at HB Studio, where she once studied.
