Patricia Ann Carroll (born May 5, 1927 – died July 30, 2022) was an American actress and comedian. She was most famous for voicing Ursula, the sea witch, in Disney's classic movie The Little Mermaid. Pat Carroll also had a long and successful career in TV shows like The Danny Thomas Show, Laverne & Shirley, and ER. She won several big awards, including an Emmy Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy Award. She was also nominated for a Tony Award.

Early Life
Pat Carroll was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on May 5, 1927. When she was five years old, her family moved to Los Angeles. Soon after, she started acting in plays in her local area. She went to Immaculate Heart High School and later attended Catholic University of America.
Acting Career
Pat Carroll began her acting journey in 1947. Her first movie role was in Hometown Girl in 1948. In 1952, she first appeared on television in The Red Buttons Show. In 1955, she performed on Broadway in a show called Catch a Star!, which earned her a nomination for a Tony Award.
In 1956, Pat won an Emmy Award for her work on Caesar's Hour. She was also a regular on the TV show Make Room for Daddy from 1961 to 1964. She appeared on many popular variety shows, like The Danny Kaye Show, The Red Skelton Show, and The Carol Burnett Show. In 1965, she played Prunella, one of the wicked stepsisters, in the TV musical Cinderella.
In the late 1970s, Pat Carroll had a very successful one-woman show about writer Gertrude Stein. This show won several theater awards. Her recorded version of the show even won a Grammy Award in 1980.
She often appeared on TV in the 1970s and 1980s. She played Lily, the mother of Shirley Feeney, in an episode of Laverne & Shirley in 1976. She also played Pearl Markowitz in the show Busting Loose. Later, she was in The Ted Knight Show and She's the Sheriff.
From the late 1980s, Pat Carroll did a lot of voice acting for cartoons. She voiced characters in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Galaxy High, and Foofur. She was also the voice of Katrina Stoneheart in Pound Puppies. She voiced Jon's feisty Grandmother in two Garfield TV specials. She also voiced Granny in the English version of Hayao Miyazaki's movie My Neighbor Totoro.
Her most famous voice role came in 1989 when she played the sea witch Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid. She sang the popular song "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Pat Carroll said that playing Ursula was one of her favorite roles ever. She played Ursula again in video games like the Kingdom Hearts series, the spinoff TV series, and at Disney theme parks. She also voiced Ursula's sister, Morgana, in the movie The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.
Pat Carroll also appeared on many game shows, including Celebrity Sweepstakes, To Tell the Truth, and Match Game 73. She also had a successful career in theater, performing in plays like Our Town and Electra. In 1990, she played the character of Falstaff in a play called The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Personal Life
Pat Carroll married Lee Karsian in 1955. They had three children together, including actress Tara Karsian. They divorced in 1976. In 1991, she received an honorary degree from Siena College. Pat Carroll was a Roman Catholic and said her faith helped her choose which projects to work on. She was also a lifelong member of the Republican Party.
Death
Pat Carroll passed away from pneumonia at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on July 30, 2022. She was 95 years old.
