Early Life and Education
Kwabs was born in London to parents from Ghana. He grew up in the Bermondsey area of Southwark. While he was a student at The Charter School, his music teacher noticed his talent.
This teacher introduced him to the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Kwabs was accepted into the orchestra and became its lead singer for four years. This was a big step in his music journey. He also studied jazz at the famous Royal Academy of Music.
Music Career
How It All Started
In 2011, Kwabs appeared on a BBC TV show called Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment. The show, led by musician Goldie, searched for talented young musicians across the United Kingdom. Kwabs was one of twelve artists chosen to create music for a special performance at Buckingham Palace. There, he performed a powerful version of the song "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child".
In 2012, he started posting cover songs on YouTube. His versions of "Like a Star" by Corinne Bailey Rae and "The Wilhelm Scream" by James Blake became very popular online. Soon after, he signed a record deal with Atlantic Records.
Rise to Fame with "Walk"
Kwabs released a few EPs (short albums), including Wrong or Right and Pray for Love. But it was his Walk EP that made him a star. The main song, "Walk", was released in 2014 and became a massive hit.
While it was a minor hit in the UK, "Walk" was extremely popular in other countries like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where it reached number one on the iTunes charts. The song got a huge boost when it was included on the soundtrack for the video game FIFA 15.
In 2015, Kwabs released his first full album, called Love + War.
