Early Life and Dance Career
Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born on 16 January 1988 in Cheltenham, England. Her mother was a dancer and gymnast, and her father was a musician. She was raised by her mother and stepfather. She grew up in Cheltenham, which she described as a quiet town.
Barnett went to St Edward's School, a private Catholic school, with a scholarship. From a young age, she took opera and ballet lessons. She also performed in school plays.
At 16, Barnett began making music in youth clubs. At 17, she moved to South London to become a dancer. She studied at the BRIT School. At 18, she started working with music producers to find her own sound. She wrote songs and made early recordings.
She later focused on music more than dance. She studied fine arts at Croydon College. Barnett worked as a backup dancer in music videos for artists like Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, and Jessie J. She appeared in Jessie J's videos for "Do It like a Dude" (2010) and "Price Tag" (2011). She also appeared in a BBC comedy sketch in 2011.
Music Journey
Starting Out: 2012–2013
In 2012, Barnett was featured on the cover of i-D magazine. She became known as Twigs because her joints would crack. She added "FKA" to her name because another group called The Twigs already existed. Barnett has said that "FKA" doesn't stand for anything specific. It's just a group of letters she liked.
Barnett released her first music, EP1, online in December 2012. She shared a video for each song on YouTube. In August 2013, she released the video for her song "Water Me." The Guardian newspaper praised her music, calling it "ethereal, twisted R&B."
Her second EP, EP2, came out in September 2013. It was produced by Barnett and Arca. Pitchfork gave EP2 a high rating. In December, she was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize. Spotify also chose her for their Spotlight on 2014 list.
First Albums: 2014–2017
In April 2014, Barnett was on the cover of The Fader magazine. She started writing her first album during a challenging time. On 24 June, she released "Two Weeks," the first song from her new album. She also directed a music video for the song.

She also danced in an Apple ad for HomePod.

Magdalene was released in November 2019. It received widespread praise from critics. The album was ranked number one on several year-end lists. Around the same time, the film Honey Boy, in which Barnett played Shy Girl, was released. The film received positive reviews. In 2020, she appeared in a music video for "Sum Bout U" with rapper 645AR.
In October 2020, Barnett shared that she was finishing a new album. She worked with Spanish musician el Guincho and other artists. Many of these collaborations happened through video calls. In November, she performed with Dua Lipa at a live stream concert. They hinted at a future song together.
On 25 January 2021, Barnett announced the song "Don't Judge Me." It featured rapper Headie One and producer Fred Again. She also mentioned that her upcoming album would have more collaborations than before. She said it would be a "going out" record. It would feature artists like Rema and Pa Salieu.

Barnett released "Measure of a Man" in November 2021. It featured British rapper Central Cee and was part of The King's Man film soundtrack. "Tears in the Club" with Canadian singer the Weeknd came out on 16 December. This was her first song with Atlantic Records. It was the main song from her mixtape, Caprisongs, which was released on 14 January 2022. Caprisongs also featured artists like Pa Salieu and Jorja Smith. Barnett received the Godlike Genius award at the 2022 BandLab NME Awards in March.

On October 15, she announced that many of her demo songs had been leaked. She said there would be "no new music for a while," delaying her third album.
In August 2024, Barnett announced her third studio album, Eusexua, would be released in January 2025. The title song came out on September 13, 2024. "Perfect Stranger" was released as the second song on October 17. A third song, "Drums of Death," was released on November 14.
Calvin Klein Ad Discussion
In January 2024, an advertisement for Calvin Klein featuring Barnett was discussed by the UK Advertising Standards Authority. Barnett defended the ad, saying she was "proud of [her] physicality." In March 2024, the Authority changed its decision. They considered Barnett's views and public opinion.
Musical Style
Barnett has a soprano singing voice. Her music is often called "genre-bending." It combines different styles like electronic music, R&B, trip hop, and avant-garde sounds. She also uses elements of afrofuturism in her songs and music videos.
Her work has been compared to artists like Kate Bush, Janet Jackson, and Massive Attack. Pitchfork noted her soft vocals and electronic production. The Wall Street Journal described her as a modern R&B artist. Variety called her music "darkly avant-garde, aggressive and atmospheric."
Barnett has said she is not limited by any music genre. She likes to experiment with sounds and create emotions with her voice. She enjoys industrial sounds and using everyday noises. She has been linked to the alternative R&B style. However, she has said that people often label her music as R&B just because of her mixed race. She believes if she were white, people would focus on the classical or choral parts of her music.
The first singers who influenced Barnett were Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye. When she started writing songs, she tried to make music like her favorite artists. She mentioned Germfree Adolescents by X-Ray Spex as her favorite album.
Personal Life
Health
Barnett had surgery in December 2017 to remove fibroid tumors from her uterus. She described living with "a fruit bowl of pain every day." She praised other women dealing with similar health issues. In 2020, she started a vegan diet. She found that eating animal products made her condition worse.
Relationships
Barnett dated English actor Robert Pattinson from September 2014 to mid-2017.
Barnett met American actor Shia LaBeouf while working on the film Honey Boy. They dated from mid-2018 to mid-2019. In December 2020, she filed a lawsuit against him. The lawsuit is expected to go to trial in September 2025.
From 2020 to 2022, Barnett was in a relationship with English musician Matty Healy from the band The 1975. She sang background vocals for their song "If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)." Their relationship also inspired Healy to write the song "I'm in Love with You."
As of 2023, Barnett is in a relationship with director and photographer Jordan Hemingway.
