Trace Dempsey Cyrus (born Neil Timothy Helson on February 24, 1989) is an American musician. He is known for being the backing singer and guitarist for the band Metro Station. Trace is the son of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. His sisters are recording artists Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus. In 2010, he also started singing and playing guitar in the pop rock band Ashland HIGH.

Early Life

Trace Cyrus was born in Ashland, Kentucky on February 24, 1989. His birth name was Neil Timothy Helson. His mother is Leticia "Tish" Cyrus. When he was four years old, he was adopted by Billy Ray Cyrus, who was his mother's second husband. After his adoption, his name was legally changed to Trace Dempsey Cyrus.

When Trace was younger, he spent his school breaks touring and performing with Billy Ray. He has a younger sister, Miley, who was the star of the Disney Channel TV show Hannah Montana. Trace and Miley recorded a song together in 2008. In 2006, Trace started working at a shopping mall in Burbank, California. He also left La Cañada High School around that time.

In 2006, Trace Cyrus helped write a song called "Country Music Has the Blues." This song was on his father Billy Ray's album Wanna Be Your Joe. The song also featured famous singers Loretta Lynn and George Jones.

In early 2006, Trace started a pop-rock band called Metro Station. He formed the band with Mason Musso, whose brother Mitchel Musso was also on Hannah Montana. Trace played guitar and sang for the band. Columbia Records signed the band after seeing their page on MySpace.

Metro Station released their first album on September 18, 2007. This album reached number 39 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their popular song, "Shake It", came out in April 2008. It reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Trace left Metro Station in early 2010. After leaving, he said he would form a new band and release his own music.

In 2008, Trace was featured on a song called "Hovering." This song was on the special edition of Miley Cyrus's album, Breakout. He also appeared in the music video for Billy Ray's song "Somebody Said a Prayer" in the same year. In 2010, he was featured in the song "Alive" for Billy Ray's band, Brother Clyde.

In early 2010, Trace Cyrus started a new pop band called Ashland HIGH. On January 1, 2012, he released his first album with Ashland HIGH, called Geronimo. People could download it for free. He recorded the album at his home in Los Angeles. On January 3, Trace released a music video for his first song from the album, "Jealous Lover."

Ashland HIGH performed live for the first time on February 24, 2012. In March 2012, Ashland HIGH went on a tour across the U.S. with other bands. In July 2012, Trace released the music video for "Sippin' on Sunshine." His sister Miley appeared in this video. He also recorded a song with Miley called "Shot in the Dark." However, he decided not to release it. He said he wanted to have his own success first, without using her fame. By 2013, Ashland HIGH had released two albums: Geronimo and Drugstore Cowboy.

In August 2014, Trace Cyrus rejoined Metro Station. They released an EP (a shorter album) called Gold on October 14, 2014. The band then released their second album, Savior, on June 30, 2015. They toured with other bands from 2015 to 2016. Metro Station broke up in 2017 after their 10-Year Anniversary tour. However, they got back together in 2019 and released a song called "I Hate Society" in 2020.

Solo Music (2017–Present)

In 2017, Trace Cyrus began releasing music on his own. His first solo song was "Lights Out" that year. On February 14, 2018, he released the song "Brenda." This song was about his former fiancée, actress Brenda Song. He released his first EP, Killing the Pain, on September 24, 2021. In 2022, he released the song "Pray at Night." He also said he was finishing his first solo album. On June 28, 2024, Trace released a new song called "Cowgirl Ride." This song showed a new country sound for him. He released another song, "On the Run," and announced a new album for 2025.
