Early Life and Family
Liam Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia. His mother, Leonie, is an author, and his father, Craig, was a social-services counsellor, a job where he helped families. Liam has two older brothers, Chris Hemsworth and Luke Hemsworth, who are also famous actors.
The Hemsworth brothers have a friendly competition for acting jobs. Liam said, "We are brothers and we are always competitive, but it is a good thing, it pushes us and we are always happy whenever someone books something."
When Liam was in the 8th grade, his family moved to Phillip Island, a small island in Australia. He and his brothers spent a lot of time surfing there. In March 2009, Liam moved to the United States to focus on his acting career.
Acting Career
Getting Started
Before he started acting, Liam worked laying floors for six months. In high school, he decided to follow his brothers into acting and started performing in school plays. He got an agent and went to his first audition when he was sixteen.
His career began in 2007 with small parts in TV shows like Home and Away and McLeod's Daughters. Soon after, he got a recurring role in the Australian TV show Neighbours. He played Josh Taylor, an athlete who used a wheelchair.
In 2008, he played Marcus, a guitarist in a band, on the children's TV show The Elephant Princess. He also appeared in the movie Knowing as a student.
Big Break in Hollywood
In 2009, an exciting opportunity came up. Liam's brother, Chris, told a magazine that Liam was almost cast in the movie The Expendables. But just hours after learning his part was cut, he was asked to audition for the lead role in the movie Thor.
Liam moved to the U.S. for the audition. Even though his brother Chris ended up getting the part of Thor, another big chance came along. Disney cast Liam as Will Blakelee in the movie The Last Song, which was based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. He starred opposite Miley Cyrus.
The Hunger Games and Other Roles
On April 4, 2011, it was announced that Liam would play Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games. The movie was released in 2012 and became a huge success. He played Gale in all four movies of the series:
- The Hunger Games (2012)
- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015)
Besides The Hunger Games, Liam starred in other movies. He was in the war drama Love and Honor and the action movie Independence Day: Resurgence. In 2019, he starred in the romantic comedy Isn't It Romantic.
In 2022, Netflix announced that Liam would take over the role of Geralt of Rivia in the TV series The Witcher, starting with Season 4.

Relationship with Miley Cyrus
Liam began dating his co-star Miley Cyrus in 2009 while they were filming The Last Song. They announced they were engaged in June 2012 but separated in 2013.
In 2016, they got back together and confirmed they were engaged again. In November 2018, their home in Malibu was destroyed in a large wildfire. Liam and Miley donated $500,000 to The Malibu Foundation to help the community recover.
