Liam Hemsworth (born on January 13, 1990) is an Australian actor. He is well-known for playing Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games movies. He also starred as Josh Taylor in the TV show Neighbours and Marcus in the children's series The Elephant Princess. In American films, he played Will Blakelee in The Last Song (2010) and Jake Morrison in Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).

Early Life and Family

Liam Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia. His mother, Leonie, was an English teacher, and his father, Craig, worked as a social-services counselor. Liam has two older brothers, Chris Hemsworth and Luke Hemsworth, who are also actors. His family has roots from different countries, including Dutch, English, Irish, Scottish, and German backgrounds.

Liam has shared that even though he and his brothers are all actors and sometimes compete for the same roles, it's a friendly competition. He said, "We are brothers and we are always competitive, but it is a good thing, it pushes us and we are always happy whenever someone books something."

When Liam was about 13 or 14 years old (in year 8 of high school), his family moved to Phillip Island. This is a small island in Australia where he spent a lot of time surfing with his brothers. In 2009, Liam moved to the United States to start his acting career. He first stayed with his brother Chris at their manager's guest house before they rented their own apartment in Los Angeles.

Career Beginnings

Starting Out in Acting (2007–2010)

Before becoming an actor, Liam worked laying floors for six months. He started thinking seriously about acting in high school when he took part in school plays. He soon found an agent and had his first audition at age sixteen.

Liam began his acting journey in 2007 with small roles in TV shows like Home and Away and McLeod's Daughters. In July 2007, he started filming for Neighbours, a popular Australian TV show where his brother Luke had also acted. Liam played a character named Josh Taylor from 2007 to 2008. Josh was an athlete who used a wheelchair and became involved with another character, Bridget Parker.

In 2008, Liam starred in the children's TV show The Elephant Princess. He played Marcus, the lead guitarist in the main character's band. He also appeared in the TV series Satisfaction and the British film Triangle. He had a brief role as an MIT student in the movie Knowing.

In 2009, Liam was chosen for a role in the film The Expendables, but his character was later removed from the script. (He did appear in The Expendables 2 later on.) Interestingly, just hours after learning he wouldn't be in The Expendables, Liam was asked to try out for the main role in the movie Thor. He moved to the U.S. for screen tests, but his brother Chris ended up getting the role.

However, soon after, Disney announced that Liam would star as Will Blakelee in the 2010 drama The Last Song. This movie was based on a book by Nicholas Sparks. Liam played the love interest of Miley Cyrus's character in the film. He also appeared in the music video for Miley Cyrus' song "When I Look at You". In 2010, Liam hosted the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards 2010 and won "Fave Kiss" with Miley Cyrus.

In 2015, Liam played a role in the Australian film The Dressmaker, alongside Kate Winslet. He then starred in director Roland Emmerich's 2016 film Independence Day: Resurgence. In 2019, he appeared in the romantic comedy Isn't It Romantic and the action crime film Killerman.

More recently, Liam has been in the horror TV series Most Dangerous Game for Quibi, a streaming platform. He plays a man who is very sick and tries to provide for his pregnant wife before he dies. In 2022, Netflix announced that Liam Hemsworth would be taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher TV series, starting from Season 4.
