Evian (/ˈviɒn/ ay-VEE-on, ev-EE-un; French: [evjɑ̃], stylized as evian) is a famous French brand of bottled mineral water. This water comes from several natural springs near the town of Évian-les-Bains, which is located on the south shore of Lake Geneva in France.

Today, Evian is owned by Danone, a large French company that operates all over the world. Besides the mineral water, Danone also uses the Evian name for a range of organic skin care products. They even have a fancy resort in France named Evian.

The Story of Evian Water

Evian first became a public company in 1859. It was known as the "Société anonyme des eaux minérales de Cachat." Just one year later, in 1860, the region where Evian is located became part of France. This happened under a special agreement called the Treaty of Turin.

The French government officially approved the bottling of Cachat water again in 1878. This approval came after a recommendation from the Medicine Academy. In 1908, Evian water started to be sold in glass bottles. These bottles were made by a company called Souchon-Neuvesel. Later, in 1969, the first plastic bottles made from PVC were introduced.

The next year, in 1970, a company called BSN Group took full control of the Evian brand. This group later became known as the Danone Group. In 1978, Evian water began to be sold in the United States. By 1995, Evian switched to new, foldable plastic bottles made from PET.

Evian in Pop Culture and Ads

In popular culture, Evian is often seen as a fancy and expensive bottled water. It was even mentioned in Agatha Christie's famous book Murder on the Orient Express. Many Hollywood celebrities are known to enjoy Evian water.

The brand often works with famous fashion designers to create special limited edition bottles. For example, Diane von Fürstenberg designed a bottle in 2013, and Elie Saab designed one in 2014. Other designers like Kenzo, Alexander Wang, Christian Lacroix, Chiara Ferragni, Virgil Abloh, Moncler, and Balmain have also created unique bottle designs.

In 2009, Evian launched a very popular advertisement called "Evian Roller Babies." This ad showed babies doing amazing roller skating tricks. It even won an award for its great visual effects!

Famous people who represent the Evian brand include singer Dua Lipa and tennis player Emma Raducanu. In 2014, Evian teamed up with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for an advertisement that got over 150 million views on YouTube. More recently, in 2023, Evian worked with the fashion house Balmain to create a special high-fashion collection called “Balmain X Evian.”

Evian and the Environment

Evian is also working to protect the environment. In April 2008, they created the Evian Water Protection Institute. This institute works on projects to manage water and wetlands with the Ramsar Convention. These projects are happening in places like Thailand, Argentina, and Nepal.

Evian is also trying to use less energy and water in its own factories. They are adding recycled plastic, called PET, into their most popular bottle sizes. The company has also joined with RecycleBank. This program gives points to households that recycle, and these points can be used for rewards.

In 2018, Evian announced a big goal: they want all of their plastic bottles to be made from 100% recycled plastic by 2025. This means they want to reuse plastic as much as possible, keeping it out of nature. To reach this goal, Evian is working with new technology companies, like Loop Industries. Loop Industries has a special technology that can recycle all kinds of PET plastic waste into the high-quality plastic Evian needs.

In April 2020, Evian became the first brand from the Danone company to achieve carbon neutrality. This means they balance the amount of carbon dioxide they release into the air with the amount they remove.
