Rainbow flag (LGBT movement) facts for kids
The Rainbow flag is a special symbol for the LGBT community. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. This flag is also known as the 'Pride Flag'. It was first created in 1978 by an artist named Gilbert Baker in San Francisco.
The Story Behind the Rainbow Flag
The Rainbow flag was first shown at a big parade in San Francisco in 1978. This parade was for LGBT pride. When it was first used, the flag had eight different colors. Later, it was changed to have six colors. This made it easier to make and print.
Why a New Symbol Was Needed
Before the Rainbow flag, some people used a pink triangle as a symbol. This pink triangle was used by the Nazis to identify people who were homosexual. Homosexual men were sent to special camps in Nazi Germany and made to wear a pink triangle. This was similar to how Jewish people had to wear a yellow Star of David.
Even though the pink triangle was used in a bad way, LGBT people were not ashamed of it. However, they wanted a new symbol that felt more positive and hopeful. That's why Gilbert Baker created the bright and colorful Rainbow flag. It became a happy and proud symbol for the community.
