Normani Kordei Hamilton (born May 31, 1996), known simply as Normani, is an American singer. She first became famous as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony. This group became one of the biggest-selling girl groups ever. While in the group, she also competed on the TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2017.

Normani started her solo music career with her first song "Love Lies" in 2018. She sang this song with Khalid. It became a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After Fifth Harmony took a break, Normani released more popular songs. These included "Dancing with a Stranger" with Sam Smith and her solo hit "Motivation". Her first full album, Dopamine, was released in 2024.

Early Life and Beginnings

Normani Kordei Hamilton was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 31, 1996. Her parents are Derrick and Andrea Hamilton. She has two older half-sisters, Ashlee and Arielle. Normani grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2005, her family moved to Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina.

As a child, Normani went to private school. She was homeschooled starting in sixth grade. From the age of three, she loved to dance and competed in gymnastics. She also took part in beauty pageants. Normani and her mother often traveled for auditions in acting, singing, and dancing. She recorded her first songs when she was 13. Normani has shared that dancing was her "first passion."

Music Career Highlights

2012–2018: The X Factor and Fifth Harmony

In 2012, Normani tried out for the TV show The X Factor USA. She sang "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin and all four judges liked her. She was later cut from the show during a training round. However, she was invited back to join a new group. This group included Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello. They later named themselves Fifth Harmony. The group made it to the finale of the show and finished in third place.

In 2013, Fifth Harmony released their first collection of songs, called an EP, titled Better Together. They released their first album, Reflection, in 2015. Their second album, 7/27, came out in 2016. These albums had hit songs like "Worth It" and "Work from Home".

After Camila Cabello left the group in 2016, Fifth Harmony continued as a quartet. They released their self-titled album in 2017. At that time, Time magazine called them "the biggest girl group in the world." Normani often took the lead in singing and dancing within the group. In March 2018, the group announced they would take a break to work on their own music.

2015–2020: Starting a Solo Career

Even while in Fifth Harmony, Normani started exploring solo projects. In 2015, she shared dance videos on her YouTube channel. She also released covers of popular songs. In 2017, Normani competed on season 24 of Dancing with the Stars. She danced with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy. They made it to the finals and finished in third place.

In October 2017, Normani signed with a management company to start her solo career. Her duet with Khalid, "Love Lies", was released in February 2018. It was part of the soundtrack for the movie Love, Simon. The song became a big hit, reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also number 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. Former U.S. President Barack Obama even included "Love Lies" on his list of favorite songs in 2019.

In April 2018, Normani became the first artist to sign with Keep Cool/RCA Records. This was before her first solo album. She also signed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina. In October 2018, Normani and Calvin Harris released an EP called Normani x Calvin Harris. This EP included songs like "Checklist" and "Slow Down". She then released her song "Waves" featuring 6lack. In January 2019, Normani and Sam Smith released "Dancing with a Stranger". This song was a huge success, reaching the top 10 in many countries. It was the most-played song on global radio in 2019. In July 2021, Normani released "Wild Side" featuring Cardi B. The song reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. She performed "Wild Side" on Rihanna's Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3. Normani won the Best Dance Performance for "Wild Side" in November 2021.

In March 2022, Normani released the song "Fair". She also became the face of Cracker Jill, singing a new version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game". In July 2022, Normani released "New to You" with Calvin Harris, Tinashe, and Offset.

In February 2023, Normani voiced a character named Giselle in the animated Disney+ show The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. In June 2023, she worked with Bose Corporation to preview her song "Candy Paint".

On February 21, 2024, Normani announced her first full album, Dopamine. The album was released on June 14, 2024. It included the songs "1:59" (featuring Gunna) and "Candy Paint". The previously released song "Wild Side" was also on the album.

Musical Style

Normani's music is mostly described as pop and R&B. It also has parts of dance-pop, retro-pop, and hip hop. Normani has said she doesn't want to be limited to just one type of music. She wants to be "genre-less," meaning she wants to make all kinds of music.

Normani is a Christian. She lives in Los Angeles, California.

In August 2016, Normani faced a lot of online bullying and hateful messages. This experience led her to temporarily close her Twitter account. In 2020, Normani spoke about how hurtful these kinds of online attacks can be. She shared that as a Black woman, she felt it was important to talk about her experiences.

Normani has been in a relationship with Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf since 2022. They announced their engagement in March 2025.

Normani's mother, Andrea Hamilton, was treated for breast cancer in 2020. She had been diagnosed with cancer before when Normani was five years old. In 2023, Normani shared that her father, Derrick, also received a cancer diagnosis. Normani is an ambassador for the American Cancer Society.
