Destin Choice Route (born October 31, 1990), known as JID (or J.I.D), is an American rapper. He was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2017, he signed with J. Cole's Dreamville Records, which is part of Interscope Records.
JID helped start the music group Spillage Village with EarthGang in 2010. Later, he formed the hip hop group Zoink Gang with Smino, Buddy, and Guapdad 4000. Many music critics praise his fast and smooth rapping style and how he uses clever wordplay in his songs.
JID became well-known after releasing several independent projects. These included Route of Evil (2012), Para Tu (2013), and DiCaprio (2015). His first studio album, The Never Story (2017), was highly praised and featured the song "Never". His second album, DiCaprio 2 (2018), included the singles "151 Rum" and "Off Deez" (with J. Cole). This album also received great reviews.
In 2021, his song "Enemy" with Imagine Dragons became very popular. It was the main song for the Netflix show Arcane. This song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it his highest-charting song. His third album, The Forever Story (2022), was also highly praised. It reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and included the hit song "Surround Sound" (featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate).

Early Life
Destin Choice Route was born on October 31, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents are Carl Louis Route Jr. and Kathy Jean Route. He is the youngest of seven children. His grandmother gave him the nickname JID because he was very "jittery" as a child.
Growing up, JID listened to bands like Sly and the Family Stone and Earth, Wind & Fire. Later, he started listening to 1990s New York hip-hop artists such as Jay-Z, Nas, and Mobb Deep. He went to Stephenson High School, where he played football as a defensive back. He earned a scholarship to play football at Hampton University. After some time, JID moved in with Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus from EarthGang, whom he had met in Virginia.
Musical Career
2010–2016: Starting Out
JID released his first mixtape, Cakewalk, on May 18, 2010. Earlier that year, he formed the group Spillage Village with EarthGang, Hollywood JB, and JordxnBryant. He released his second mixtape, Cakewalk 2, on June 29, 2011. His third mixtape, Route of All Evil, came out on June 25, 2012. It featured artists like EarthGang and Stillz.
JID worked at call centers and delivered pizza to pay for his music career. Soon, he started getting booked for local live shows. On October 22, 2013, he released his next mixtape called Para Tu. This mixtape was later re-released on December 29, 2017.
In 2014, JID opened shows with EarthGang and Bas on Ab-Soul's These Days Tour. This happened after Spillage Village released their first group project, Bears Like This. On January 26, 2015, JID released his first extended play (EP) called DiCaprio EP. On July 6, Spillage Village released their second group project, Bears Like This Too. JID also toured with Omen on the Elephant Eyes Tour and Bas on the Too High to Riot Tour. On December 2, 2016, Spillage Village released Bears Like This Too Much. This project featured J. Cole and Bas, and had production from Mac Miller, Ducko Mcfli, Childish Major, and J. Cole.
2017: The Never Story
On February 20, 2017, it was announced that JID had signed with J. Cole's Dreamville label. He first released the single "Never." His full album, The Never Story, came out on March 10, 2017. The album included guest artists like EarthGang, 6LACK, and Mereba. It also featured production from J. Cole, Hollywood JB, Christo, and Childish Major. Later, he released three more music videos from the album: "D/vision," "Hereditary," and "EdEddnEddy."
JID also performed as an opening act on the 4 Your Eyez Only Tour in 2017. This tour took place in North America and Europe. On December 13, JID appeared on a remix with Foster The People and Saba called "Pay The Man."
2018–2020: DiCaprio 2
In June 2018, JID was featured on the cover of XXL's 2018 Freshman Class magazine. In July, he was featured on Denzel Curry's song "Sirens" from Ta13oo. It was also announced that he would go on tour with Mac Miller and Thundercat. However, that tour was later canceled.
The first single for his second album, "151 Rum," was released on September 18. On October 3, 2018, JID showed his song "Working Out" on A COLORS SHOW. On his birthday, his second album DiCaprio 2 was announced for release on November 26, 2018. The album's second official single, "Off Deez" featuring J. Cole, was released on November 6.
DiCaprio 2 was released on November 26, 2018. It received many positive reviews and was highly praised. JID announced the first part of his own tour, called the Catch Me If You Can tour. It included 34 shows starting in January 2019. Supporting artists for the tour included Reason, Hardo, and Lou The Human. On February 12, 2019, JID announced the second part of his Catch Me If You Can tour. This part of the tour included 26 shows starting in May, with supporting acts Saba, Deante' Hitchcock, and Mereba.
In 2019, JID was part of the Dreamville group album Revenge of the Dreamers III. The songs "Down Bad" and "Costa Rica" from this album were certified gold. In 2020, as part of Spillage Village, he was featured on the songs "End of Daze" and "Baptize" for their fourth group album Spilligion.
2021–present: The Forever Story and Future Projects
JID was featured on Doja Cat's song "Options," which was on her album Planet Her. He then worked with Imagine Dragons on the very popular song "Enemy." This song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming his highest-charting song.
JID hinted about his third album, The Forever Story, throughout 2021. The first song from the album, "Surround Sound" featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate, was released on January 14, 2022. On March 31, he appeared on the Dreamville album D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape, on the songs "Stick" and "Barry From Simpson." On August 9, JID released the second song from The Forever Story, called "Dance Now," with Kenny Mason.
The Forever Story was released on August 26, 2022. It featured guest artists like Kenny Mason, EarthGang, 21 Savage, Baby Tate, Lil Durk, Ari Lennox, Yasiin Bey, Lil Wayne, Johntá Austin, Ravyn Lenae, and Eryn Allen Kane.
On September 8, 2022, JID performed a special concert for NPR Tiny Desk Concerts.
On March 28, 2023, music producer Metro Boomin shared a picture on Twitter of himself and JID working in a studio. He wrote, "Got a lot of new music coming but when me and @JIDsv drop." JID later confirmed that he and Metro Boomin are working on an album together.
On October 13, 2023, JID was featured on Westside Gunn's song "Mamas PrimeTime," along with Conway the Machine. This song was from Gunn's album And Then You Pray for Me.
On November 9, 2023, JID was featured in the opening of the video game Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.
On July 12, 2024, JID was featured on Eminem's song "Fuel" from his album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).
On August 8, 2024, JID was featured on Katy Perry's new song "Artificial", from her album 143.

Influences
When JID was growing up, he first connected with music through his parents' collection of classic funk and soul records. He has said that Sly and the Family Stone, D'Angelo, Wu-Tang Clan, Little Dragon, boom bap music, New York hip hop (like Nas and Jay-Z), and Arctic Monkeys are his biggest influences. He also mentioned other Atlanta artists like OutKast, T.I., Goodie Mob, and Gucci Mane as influences.
