Early Life and Music Inspiration
Giveon Dezmann Evans was born in Long Beach, California. He grew up with his two brothers and his single mother. He loved music from a young age and often sang at birthday parties. His mother encouraged him to follow his passion for music. She also protected him and his brothers from difficult situations.
Giveon went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School. When he was 18, he joined a music program at the Grammy Museum. There, he discovered and loved the music of Frank Sinatra. Giveon was also inspired by R&B and soul music, especially Drake. He learned about Barry White and Frank Sinatra through a music history program. Giveon wanted to update the sound of 1960s jazz music.
Music Career
Starting Out: 2018–2019
Giveon released his first song, "Garden Kisses," in August 2018. Soon after, a Canadian record producer named Sevn Thomas found his music on SoundCloud. Thomas signed Giveon to his record label, Not So Fast, and Epic Records. After signing, Giveon started performing his songs live. He opened for Snoh Aalegra on her tour in Europe and North America in late 2019.
Big Hits: 2019–2021
While on tour with Snoh Aalegra, Giveon often sang freestyles because he only had a few songs out. Giveon's manager sent one of his freestyle performances from Chicago to Drake. This led to their song "Chicago Freestyle." In February 2020, Giveon was featured on Drake's song "Chicago Freestyle." At first, it was only on SoundCloud and YouTube.
In March 2020, Giveon released his first EP, Take Time. This EP reached the top of Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. Critics praised Take Time, calling it "breathtaking" and "polished." In May 2020, "Chicago Freestyle" was released on streaming platforms. The song became a top 40 hit in several countries.
In September 2020, Giveon announced his second EP, When It's All Said and Done. It included the song "Stuck on You." This EP debuted at number 93 on the Billboard 200. Giveon's songs "Stuck on You" and "Like I Want You" started appearing on Billboard R&B charts. "Like I Want You" was certified gold in December 2020. Take Time was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Giveon also performed "Stuck on You" on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
In February 2021, "Heartbreak Anniversary" and "Like I Want You" entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. On March 12, he released When It's All Said and Done... Take Time. This album combined his first two EPs and added a new song called "All to Me." A week later, he was featured on Justin Bieber's hit song "Peaches" with Daniel Caesar.
New Albums: 2022–Present
On June 2, 2022, Giveon announced his first full studio album, Give or Take. He shared a short video trailer on social media. The album was released on June 24. It received good reviews from critics. Give or Take debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album included popular songs like "For Tonight", "Lie Again", and "Lost Me". "For Tonight" was certified platinum, and the other two were certified gold. In September 2022, Giveon recorded a song called "Time" for the movie Amsterdam. Drake helped write this song.
After a break, Giveon appeared on Teddy Swims's song "Are You Even Real" in January 2025. On May 28, Giveon announced his second album, Beloved. The album was released on July 11, 2025, and received high praise. The songs "Twenties" and "Rather Be" supported the album. Giveon credits the Grammy Museum for helping him find the musicians who inspired this album's sound.
Giveon's Unique Style
