Baritone facts for kids
A baritone is a type of male singing voice. It's in the middle range, higher than a bass voice (which is very low) and lower than a tenor voice (which is high). Think of it as the "middle ground" for male singers.
The usual range for a baritone voice is from the second F below middle C up to the F above middle C. This makes it the most common male voice type you'll hear.
Famous Baritone Roles in Opera
Baritones often sing important parts in operas. Some famous roles include:
- Papageno in Mozart's opera The Magic Flute.
- Figaro in Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville.
One of the most famous baritones of the late 20th century was Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He was known for his amazing performances in operas, concerts, and especially for singing Lieder, which are German art songs.
Baritone Instruments
Sometimes, musical instruments are also called "baritone." This is because they can make sounds that are similar to the range of a baritone singer's voice. For example, you might hear of a baritone saxophone or a baritone horn.
