Rupert "Sevn" Thomas Jr. (born July 7, 1991) is a talented Canadian record producer, songwriter, and singer. He has helped create many popular songs for famous artists. Some of his biggest hits include "Work" by Rihanna, "Pop Style" and "Chicago Freestyle" by Drake, and "Heartbreak Anniversary" by Giveon. He also released his own music, like an instrumental EP called Hidden Hand in 2014. When he was younger, he performed as a singer using the name Suga Prince.
Early Life and Early Music
Rupert Thomas Jr. grew up in Scarborough, a part of Toronto, Ontario. His parents were from Jamaica. They loved music and had their own "sound systems," which are like big mobile DJ setups. They often hosted parties in their basement with lots of music. His uncle, Rappa Robert, is a Dancehall artist who took young Rupert to music studios in Jamaica.
Rupert started making beats when he was in fifth grade, using a music keyboard called a Korg Triton. In 2002, when he was just ten years old, he released a song called "Too Young for Love." He sang on it as Suga Prince, and the music video even featured a young Ayesha Curry!
Around that time, Rupert signed with a record company called Sony BMG. However, he later paused his music career when the company changed. It was during this time that he first met another producer named Boi-1da. In high school, Rupert kept making beats. He reconnected with Boi-1da, who became his mentor and a frequent partner in making music. In 2012, Rupert even competed against WondaGurl, another talented producer, in a beat-making battle. The judges couldn't pick a winner because both were so good!
Making Hit Songs
In 2013, Sevn Thomas started getting credits for producing and writing songs for other artists. He worked on songs like "Love Me Til I Die" for Kelly Rowland. In 2014, he produced "Low" for the group Mobb Deep. That same year, he released his own instrumental EP, Hidden Hand. An EP is like a mini-album, with fewer songs than a full album.
The years 2015 and 2016 were big for Sevn. He worked with Boi-1da and others on several songs that became huge hits. These included Drake's "10 Bands" and "Pop Style," and Rihanna's "Work," which reached number one on the Billboard charts! Billboard magazine even said he was one of the producers who helped bring dancehall music back to the charts in 2016. He also co-produced "Don't Run" for PartyNextDoor, which was a hit on the R&B charts. In April 2016, he released his own single, "Can't Sleep Alone." He continued to produce more songs in 2017 for artists like Travis Scott, Kehlani, and GoldLink.
In 2018, Sevn Thomas produced tracks on many popular albums. He worked on Travis Scott's Astroworld album, helping create songs like "Wake Up." He also contributed to Nicki Minaj's Queen album, Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V, and The Carters' Everything Is Love. His work continued into the 2020s, with hits like Drake's "Chicago Freestyle" and Giveon's "Heartbreak Anniversary". In 2023, he co-produced "SKITZO" on Travis Scott's album UTOPIA.
Sevn Thomas has become a very important name behind the scenes in music, helping to shape the sound of many of today's biggest artists.
