Matthew Jehu Samuels (born October 12, 1986), known as Boi-1da, is a famous Canadian music producer and songwriter. He is based in Toronto, Ontario. His name, Boi-1da, sounds like "Boy Wonder."

Boi-1da is a main producer for Drake's music label, OVO Sound. He has produced songs for many top artists. These include Drake, Rihanna, Eminem, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Nas, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar. In 2015, he was the main producer for Drake's popular mixtape, If You're Reading This It's Too Late.

Early Life and First Steps in Music

Matthew Samuels was born in Kingston, Jamaica. When he was three years old, his family moved to Canada. He grew up in the North York and Scarborough areas of Toronto. He also lived in Ajax, Ontario, and went to Pickering High School.

His father loved dancehall music, so Matthew grew up listening to Jamaican sounds. When he was eight, his mom bought him a Casio keyboard. At 15, a friend showed him a music program called FL Studio. Even without formal music lessons, he started making beats using this program.

A few years later, he became very good at it. He won the "Battle of the Beatmakers" championships three times in a row! Because of this, he was later asked to be a judge for the competition. His first professional music work was at age 18. He produced two songs for Drake's early mixtape, Room for Improvement.

Boi-1da's Music Career

Boi-1da started his career by producing for Canadian artist Drake. He worked on Drake's early mixtapes, Room for Improvement (2006) and Comeback Season (2007).

In 2010, Boi-1da produced his first song that reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. This was "Not Afraid" by Eminem. He also produced many songs for Drake's second album, Take Care, which came out in 2011.

In 2016, Rihanna released the dancehall song "Work", featuring Drake. This song also hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Boi-1da's second song to top the charts. From 2016 to 2017, he kept producing dancehall-style tracks. These included Drake's "Controlla" and Nicki Minaj's "Regret in Your Tears".

He also worked with Kanye West on the song "Real Friends" in 2016. In 2017, he produced "No Limit" for G-Eazy.

In 2018, Boi-1da produced "God's Plan" for Drake. He also produced "Lucky You" for Eminem that year. In 2019, he worked on "No Guidance" by Chris Brown featuring Drake. He also produced "1000 Nights" for Ed Sheeran.

More recently, in 2020, he produced "Tyler Herro" for Jack Harlow. In 2023, Boi-1da announced an interesting project. He teamed up with the brand Bacardi to create an "AI-Powered Album." This project uses artificial intelligence to learn from his unreleased music beats.

Boi-1da's Music Style

Boi-1da is known for his special dancehall sound. This is because he grew up listening to dancehall music before hip-hop. He often adds live instruments to his beats. He also frequently uses an air horn sound effect, which is common in dancehall and reggae music. Boi-1da also likes to use samples in his songs. Samples are small parts of other recordings used in new music.

He currently uses FL Studio 12 to create his beats. Before this, he used older versions of Fruity Loops. Boi-1da has shared that he was inspired by other famous producers. These include Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and The Neptunes.
