He also had a regular role on the TV show Wind at My Back, which won a Gemini Award. His most famous acting role was in his teenage years. ..... He also had smaller parts in movies like The Last Don and Perfect Pie. Perfect Pie was his last movie before he stopped acting to focus on music.
Starting a Music Career
Early in his music journey, Noah Shebib was a DJ known as DJ Chilly. He performed with MC Elite. Later, he decided to become a music producer. He started working with local artists in Toronto. He got the nickname "40 Days & 40 Nights" because he would work in the studio all night without sleeping. This nickname was later shortened to "40."
Working with Drake
In 2005, 40 began working with Aubrey Graham, who was then a star on the TV show Degrassi. At first, 40 was just recording and mixing Drake's music. He didn't help with songwriting or producing.
However, after a few days, 40 decided he wanted to work only with Drake. He believed they could "take over the world together." This was a big moment for both of them.
Big Music Projects
40's major breakthrough came in 2008. He was an executive producer for Drake's mixtape So Far Gone, working with producer Boi-1da. 40 recorded and mixed every song on the mixtape. He also produced important songs like "The Calm" and "Successful." These songs helped define Drake's unique sound.
He continued to work on Drake's first album, Thank Me Later, and his second album, Take Care. On Take Care, 40 co-produced almost every song. He also recorded and mixed the entire album. 40 also produced "I'm Single" for Lil Wayne and "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" for Alicia Keys.
In 2012, 40, Drake, and Oliver El-Khatib started the OVO record label. They often share new music on their blog before it's officially released. For example, the song "Marvins Room" was posted online just five days after it was made. 40 has continued to help produce Drake's newer songs, including "Started from the Bottom" and albums like Nothing Was the Same, Views, and Scorpion.
Music Production Style
40 has played a huge part in creating Drake's music. Together, their "atmospheric, brooding sound" has influenced hip hop music. 40's production style is known for being simple and calm. It often features deep, quiet sounds from synthesizers, simple piano or guitar parts, and soft, muffled drums. His music also has a cinematic, movie-like feel.
For example, in the song "Marvins Room", 40 mixed the music to sound "very dark and quiet and muddy." The vocals, however, cut through clearly. He is known for making the low bass sounds in his music very strong.
Personal Life and Health
In 2005, when he was 22 years old, Noah Shebib was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. His personal story is shared on the National Multiple Sclerosis Society website. He talks about his experiences with MS, hoping to raise awareness and help others. His mother also has multiple sclerosis.
In October 2022, York University gave him an honorary degree called a Doctorate of Laws (LLD). This was to recognize his achievements.
