History of Casio
Casio was started in April 1946 by Tadao Kashio. He was an engineer who was good at making things.
Early Inventions: The Yubiwa Pipe
Kashio's first big product was something called the yubiwa pipe. This was a special ring that could hold a cigarette. It let people smoke their cigarette all the way down. It also kept their hands free. Japan was very poor after World War II. Cigarettes were valuable, so this invention was a big success.
Making Calculators
In 1949, Kashio saw electric calculators at a show in Tokyo. He and his younger brothers, Toshio, Kazuo, and Yukio, decided to make their own. They used the money they earned from the yubiwa pipe.
Most calculators back then used gears. You had to turn a crank or use a motor to make them work. Toshio knew a lot about electronics. He decided to build a calculator using special electronic parts called solenoids.
Their first calculator was finished in 1954. It was the first electro-mechanical calculator made in Japan. It was about the size of a desk.
Key Innovations in Calculators
Casio's calculator had some important new ideas:
- It used a 10-key number pad. Other calculators had many more keys for each number place.
- It had only one display window. Other calculators showed numbers in three different windows.
The First All-Electric Calculator
In 1957, Casio released the Model 14-A. This was the world's first all-electric compact calculator. It used special relay technology. It cost 485,000 yen. The year 1957 is also when the company officially became Casio Computer Co., Ltd.
Growth in the 1980s and Beyond
In the 1980s, Casio became famous for its affordable electronic musical keyboards. Many people bought them for their homes.
The company also became well-known for its many different kinds of watches. Casio was one of the first to make quartz watches, which use a vibrating crystal to keep time. They made both digital and analog watches. They even sold watches that had calculators built into them!
Casio also made watches that could:
- Show the time in many different time zones.
- Display temperature, air pressure, and altitude.
- Even show Global Positioning System (GPS) information.
Digital Camera Innovations
Casio has also made many important steps forward in digital cameras.
- In 1995, they made the QV-10. This was the first digital camera for everyday people with a screen on the back.
- They made the first camera that could take three-megapixel photos.
- They created the first super-small digital camera.
- They also made the first digital camera to use special ceramic lens technology.
