Min Yoon-gi (Hangul: 민윤기; born March 9, 1993), known as Suga (Korean: 슈가; pronounced [ɕʰuɡa̠]) and Agust D, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and music producer. He became famous as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS in June 2013.
Suga released his first solo music collection, Agust D, in 2016. It was re-released in 2018 and became very popular online. In 2020, he released his second solo collection, D-2. This collection reached high spots on music charts around the world.
In 2023, Suga released his first solo album, D-Day. It reached number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. This made him one of the highest-charting South Korean solo artists ever, tying with his bandmate Jimin. Suga has helped write and produce over 160 songs. This includes "Wine" by Suran, which won an award in 2017.

Early Life and School
Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea. He is the younger of two sons. He went to Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School.
In March 2019, he finished his degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Global Cyber University. He then continued his studies at Hanyang Cyber University.
Music Journey
How It Started (1993–2010)
Suga became interested in rap music after hearing a song called "Ragga Muffin" by Stony Skunk. He said it was unlike anything he had heard before. After listening to Epik High, he decided he wanted to be a rapper.
By age 13, he started writing song lyrics and learned about MIDI, which helps create music. At 17, he worked part-time at a music studio. He began composing, arranging, rapping, and performing his own music. Before joining a company, he was an underground rapper known as Gloss. In 2010, he was part of a hip hop group called D-Town. He produced a song for them called "518-062".
Joining BTS (2013–Present)
Suga first joined Big Hit Entertainment as a music producer. He trained for three years with his bandmates J-Hope and RM. He officially became a member of BTS in June 2013. They debuted on Mnet's M Countdown with their song "No More Dream." Suga has helped produce and write lyrics for many songs on all of BTS's albums.
Suga wrote and performed the opening song "Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" for BTS's album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 (2015). This song was about the worries of growing up. He also performed "Intro: Never Mind" for the next album, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2. This song talked about his teenage years. In 2020, he performed "Interlude: Shadow" for the album Map of the Soul: 7. This song explored BTS's fame and how it felt.
Suga has also released two solo songs under BTS's name. The first is "First Love" from the 2016 album Wings. It's a rap song where he talks to his childhood piano as if it were a friend. The second song is "Trivia: Seesaw" from the 2018 album Love Yourself: Answer. This song is about the ups and downs of falling in love.
In 2018, Suga and the other BTS members received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit. This award was given by the President of South Korea for their help in promoting Korean culture.
Solo Music (2016–Present)
Suga released his first free solo music collection, Agust D, on August 15, 2016. He shared it on SoundCloud. In this collection, he talked about his personal struggles. Fuse TV even called it one of the best music collections of 2016. In 2018, he made Agust D available on streaming platforms. It quickly became popular on music charts in the US.
In 2017, Suga wrote the song "Wine" for singer Suran. This song became very successful, reaching number two on a major South Korean music chart. It also won an award for Best R&B song.
In January 2019, Suga was featured on Lee So-ra's song "Song Request." He also helped write and produce it. The song became a hit. He later produced "Eternal Sunshine" for Epik High and "We Don't Talk Together" for singer Heize. In December, American singer Halsey released "Suga's Interlude" from her album Manic, which featured and was produced by Suga.
On May 6, 2020, IU released "Eight" which featured and was produced by Suga. This song immediately went to number one on music charts. Suga released his second solo music collection, D-2, on May 22, 2020. The main song from this collection was "Daechwita." D-2 reached number 11 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It was also the first Korean solo release to reach the top 10 in the United Kingdom.
In 2021, Suga re-created Samsung's famous ringtone, "Over The Horizon." He also produced the song "You" for Japanese singer ØMI. In April 2022, Suga co-wrote, produced, and was featured on the song "That That" with Psy. This song was a big hit. In December 2022, Suga started his own talk show called Suchwita on YouTube. On the show, he chats with guests over drinks.
In January 2023, Suga became a global ambassador for the fashion brand Valentino. In April, he became an ambassador for the NBA. His first solo album, D-Day, was released on April 21, 2023. It included the songs "People Pt. 2" and "Haegeum." The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. A Disney+ documentary called Suga: Road to D-Day was released on the same day. It showed how he created the album. Suga also hosted a radio show on Apple Music to promote D-Day. He then started his first solo world tour, the D-Day Tour, visiting many countries.
His Name
Suga's stage name, Suga (Hangul: 슈가), comes from the first parts of "shooting guard" (Hangul: 슈팅 가드). This was the position he played in basketball when he was a student. He chose the name Agust D in 2016 for his solo music. Agust D comes from "DT" for his hometown, Daegu Town, and "Suga" spelled backward.
His Artistry
Suga writes, composes, arranges, mixes, and masters his own music. He has over 160 songs registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association. He plays the piano and mainly creates hip hop and R&B music. His song lyrics often talk about "dreams and hope." He wants his music to be a source of strength for many people. He says Stony Skunk and Epik High inspired him to pursue hip hop.
Critics have said that Suga's music shows his talent for creating great productions and his strong rap style. They also noted how he turns his personal struggles into strengths in his music.

In 2018, Suga bought an apartment in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.
Health
Suga had surgery for appendicitis in December 2013. He had to take a break from performing to recover.
In December 2016, Suga hurt his ear after tripping. He took a week off from performing to let it heal properly.
In November 2020, Suga had surgery on his left shoulder to fix an injury. He took a break from activities to recover fully. He returned to performing in January 2021.
Military Service
In December 2020, rules about mandatory military service were changed for BTS members. This allowed them to delay their service until the end of 2022. On August 7, 2023, after his world tour, Big Hit announced that Suga had applied to begin his military service. He started his service on September 22, 2023, working as a social worker.
Helping Others
Suga is known for his kindness and donations.
- On his 25th birthday, he donated beef to 39 orphanages. He did this in the name of "ARMY," BTS's fanbase, keeping a promise he made years ago.
- For his 26th birthday, he donated ₩100 million (about $72,000 USD) and 329 BT21 Shooky dolls to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
- In February 2020, he donated ₩100 million to help with COVID-19 relief efforts in his hometown of Daegu.
- In March 2021, he donated another ₩100 million to a hospital in Daegu to help children with cancer.
- On his 29th birthday in March 2022, Suga donated ₩100 million to help victims of wildfires in South Korea.
- On March 9, 2023, he donated ₩100 million to Save the Children. This money helped buy blankets and school supplies for children in southern Turkey and northern Syria.
Suga has also openly talked about mental health. He shares his experiences with depression through his music. He wants to make it easier for people to talk about these topics. He also supports equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
