Min Yoon-gi (Hangul: 민윤기; born March 9, 1993), known as Suga (Hangul: 슈가) and Agust D, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and music producer. He is a member of the famous South Korean boy band BTS. He joined BTS in June 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment.
Suga has also released his own music. His first solo project, a mixtape called Agust D, came out in 2016. It was later released on music platforms in 2018 and became very popular. In 2020, he released his second mixtape, D-2. This mixtape did very well, reaching high spots on music charts in the US, UK, and Australia.
In 2023, Suga released his first solo album, D-Day. It reached number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. This made him one of the highest-charting South Korean solo artists ever, along with his bandmate Jimin. Suga has helped write and produce over 160 songs. This includes "Wine" for singer Suran, which won an award in 2017.

Early Life and School
Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea. He has one older brother. He went to Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School.
In March 2019, he finished his degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Global Cyber University. After that, he studied for a Master's degree in Advertising and Media at Hanyang Cyber University.
Music Career
Starting Out (Before 2010)
Suga became interested in rap music after hearing a song called "Ragga Muffin" by Stony Skunk. He said it was unlike anything he had heard before. After listening to Epik High, he decided he wanted to become a rapper too.
When he was 13, he started writing song lyrics and learning about music production. By age 17, he worked part-time at a music studio. He began composing, arranging, rapping, and performing his own music. Before joining Big Hit Entertainment, he was an underground rapper known as Gloss. In 2010, he was part of a hip hop group called D-Town. He produced a song called "518-062" to remember the Gwangju Uprising.
Joining BTS (2013-Present)
Suga first joined Big Hit Entertainment as a music producer. He trained for three years with his future bandmates J-Hope and RM. He officially debuted as a member of BTS on Mnet's M Countdown in June 2013. Their first song was "No More Dream" from their album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Suga has written and produced many songs for BTS's albums.
Suga wrote and performed the opening song "Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" for BTS's album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 (2015). This song was about the worries of growing up. He also performed "Intro: Never Mind" for the next album, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2. This song talked about his teenage years. In 2020, he performed "Interlude: Shadow" for the album Map of the Soul: 7. This song discussed BTS's fame and how it felt different from what they had dreamed of.
Suga has also released two solo songs under BTS's name. "First Love" was on their 2016 album Wings. It was a rap song about his childhood piano, treating it like a friend. The second song was "Trivia: Seesaw," which was about the ups and downs of falling in love. He performed this for BTS's 2018 album Love Yourself: Answer.
In 2018, Suga and the other BTS members received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit. This award was given by the President of South Korea for their work in promoting Korean culture. In 2021, he was also named a Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture. This role helps South Korea connect with the world.
Solo Music (2016-Present)
Suga released his first free mixtape called Agust D in 2016 on SoundCloud. He chose not to sell it as a regular album because he felt it was "trapped in some sort of framework." In this mixtape, he talked about his struggles with depression and social anxiety. Fuse TV even named it one of the top 20 mixtapes of 2016. In 2018, he made Agust D available on streaming platforms, and it did very well on music charts.
In 2017, Suga wrote the song "Wine" for singer Suran. This song became very popular in South Korea and won an award. Suga also won an award for his work on the song.
In 2019, Suga was featured on Lee So-ra's song "Song Request." He also helped write and produce the song. He later produced "Eternal Sunshine" for Epik High and "We Don't Talk Together" for singer Heize. In December, American singer Halsey released a song called "Suga's Interlude" on her album, which featured and was produced by Suga.
On May 6, 2020, IU released "Eight" which featured and was produced by Suga. This song quickly reached number one on music charts. Suga released his second mixtape, D-2, on May 22, 2020. The main song from the mixtape was "Daechwita". D-2 was a big success, reaching high spots on charts in the US and UK.
In 2021, Suga re-made Samsung's famous ringtone, "Over The Horizon." He also produced a song called "You" for Japanese singer ØMI. In December, Suga was featured on the song "Girl of My Dreams" from American rapper Juice Wrld's album. This song also charted on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2022, he co-wrote, produced, and featured on the song "That That" for Psy. In December 2022, Suga started his own talk show on YouTube called Suchwita, where he chats with guests.
In January 2023, Suga became a brand ambassador for the fashion brand Valentino. In April, he also became an ambassador for the NBA. His first solo album, D-Day, was released on April 21, 2023, under his Agust D name. The album included the songs "People Pt. 2" and "Haegeum". D-Day debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. A Disney+ documentary called Suga: Road to D-Day was released the same day, showing how he created the album. Suga also hosted a radio show on Apple Music to promote D-Day. He then started his first solo world tour, the Suga Agust D Tour, performing in the US, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. In October 2023, his song "The Last" from the Agust D mixtape reached over 100 million streams on Spotify.
Stage Names
Suga's stage name (Hangul: 슈가) comes from the first parts of the words "shooting guard." This was the position he played in basketball when he was a student. He started using the name Agust D in 2016 for his mixtape. This name comes from "DT" for his hometown, Daegu Town, and "Suga" spelled backward.
His Music Style
Suga writes, composes, arranges, mixes, and masters his own music. He has over 160 songs registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association. He plays the piano and mainly creates hip hop and R&B music. His song lyrics often talk about "dreams and hope." He wants his music to give strength to many people. He says Stony Skunk and Epik High inspired him to make hip hop music.
Critics have said that Suga's music shows his talent for making great productions and his strong rap style. They also noted how he uses his personal struggles to make his music powerful. In January 2018, Suga became a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association.

In 2018, Suga bought an apartment in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.
Health
In December 2013, Suga had surgery for appendicitis. He had to take a break from performing to recover. In December 2016, he injured his ear after tripping. He took a week off from performing and dancing to let it heal.
In November 2020, Suga had surgery on his left shoulder to fix an old injury. He took a break from activities to recover fully. He returned to performing with BTS in January 2021.
Military Service
In South Korea, all men must complete mandatory military service. In 2021, BTS members were allowed to postpone their service until the end of 2022. On August 7, 2023, after his world tour, Big Hit announced that Suga had applied to begin his military service. He started his service on September 22, working as a social worker.
Giving Back
Suga is known for his kindness and donations. On his 25th birthday, he donated beef to 39 orphanages. He did this in the name of "ARMY," BTS's fanbase, keeping a promise he made in 2014. The next year, for his 26th birthday, he donated 100 million Korean won and 329 BT21 Shooky dolls to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
In February 2020, Suga donated 100 million Korean won to help with coronavirus relief efforts in his hometown of Daegu. In March 2021, he donated another 100 million Korean won to a hospital in Daegu to help child cancer patients. On his 29th birthday in March 2022, he donated 100 million Korean won to help victims of wildfires in South Korea. On his 30th birthday in March 2023, he donated 100 million Korean won to Save the Children to help children affected by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
Suga has also openly talked about mental health and his experiences with depression through his music. He tries to make it easier for people to talk about these topics. He has also shown support for the LGBTQ+ community.
