Min Yoon-gi (born March 9, 1993), known as Suga and Agust D, is a talented South Korean rapper, songwriter, and music producer. He is famous for being a member of the global music group BTS. Suga joined BTS in June 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment.

Besides his work with BTS, Suga also creates his own music. He released his first solo collection of songs, called Agust D, in 2016. It became very popular, even reaching number three on a global music chart! In 2020, he released another solo collection, D-2, which also did very well on music charts around the world. In 2023, Suga released his first solo album, D-Day. This album was a huge success, reaching number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. Suga has helped write and produce over 160 songs, showing his amazing talent in music.

Early Life and Learning

Min Yoon-gi was born in Daegu, South Korea, on March 9, 1993. He went to Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. Later, he studied Broadcasting and Entertainment at Global Cyber University. In 2019, he continued his studies at Hanyang Cyber University to learn more about Advertising and Media.

Suga's Music Career

How His Music Journey Began

Suga became interested in rap music when he heard a song called "Ragga Muffin" by Stony Skunk. He felt it was very unique. After listening to another group called Epik High, he decided he wanted to become a rapper too.

When he was just 13, Suga started writing song lyrics and learned how to use MIDI (a way to create music with computers). By age 17, he was working part-time at a music studio. He spent his time composing, arranging music, rapping, and performing. Before joining a big company, he was known as an underground rapper named Gloss. In 2010, he even produced a song called "518-062" with his hip-hop group D-Town.

Suga first joined Big Hit Entertainment as a music producer. He trained for three years with his future bandmates, J-Hope and RM. In June 2013, he officially debuted as a member of BTS. Their first song was "No More Dream" from their album 2 Cool 4 Skool.

Suga has written and produced many songs for BTS's albums. He created special introductory songs like "Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life" and "Intro: Never Mind." These songs shared his thoughts about growing up and his teenage years. In 2020, he performed "Interlude: Shadow," which talked about BTS's fame and how it felt.

He also released two solo songs under the name of BTS. "First Love" from the album Wings is a rap song about his childhood piano. "Trivia: Seesaw" from Love Yourself: Answer talks about the feelings of falling in love.

In 2018, Suga and the other members of BTS received a special award called the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit. This award recognized their amazing work in sharing Korean culture with the world. In 2021, he and BTS were also named "Special Presidential Envoys" to help represent South Korea globally.

Suga's Solo Music Journey

In 2016, Suga released his first solo collection of songs, called Agust D, for free on SoundCloud. He wanted to share his personal stories and feelings through this music. It was even named one of the top mixtapes of 2016!

Suga also writes and produces music for other artists. In 2017, he composed the hit song "Wine" for singer Suran. This song won an award for Best R&B. In 2019, he worked with Lee So-ra on "Song Request" and produced a song for Epik High. He also collaborated with American singer Halsey on "Suga's Interlude".

In 2020, Suga teamed up with IU for the song "Eight", which quickly became a number one hit. He then released his second solo collection, D-2, with the popular song "Daechwita". This collection also did very well on music charts.

Suga continued to collaborate with many artists. In 2021, he re-composed Samsung's famous ringtone, "Over The Horizon." He also worked with Japanese singer ØMI and American rapper Juice Wrld. In 2022, he co-wrote and produced the song "That That" with Psy, which was a big hit. That same year, he started his own talk show on YouTube called Suchwita, where he chats with guests.

In 2023, Suga became a brand ambassador for the fashion brand Valentino and the NBA. His first solo album, D-Day, was released on April 21, 2023. It included popular songs like "People Pt. 2" and "Haegeum". A Disney+ documentary, Suga: Road to D-Day, showed how he created the album. He also hosted a radio show on Apple Music to promote D-Day. After the album's release, he went on his first solo world tour, the D-Day Tour, visiting many countries. On October 6, 2023, his song "The Last" from Agust D reached over 100 million streams on Spotify.

Suga's stage name, Suga (Hangul: 슈가), comes from the first part of "shooting guard." This was the position he played in basketball when he was a student. He chose the name Agust D for his solo music in 2016. "Agust D" is "Suga" spelled backward, and "DT" stands for "Daegu Town," his hometown.

His Artistic Style

Suga is involved in every step of making his music. He writes, composes, arranges, mixes, and masters his own songs. The Korea Music Copyright Association credits him with over 160 registered songs! He plays the piano and mainly creates hip hop and R&B music.

His song lyrics often talk about "dreams and hope." He wants his music to be a source of strength for many people. He says that Stony Skunk and Epik High inspired him to get into hip hop music.

Critics have praised Suga's music, saying that his solo work shows his talent for creating great productions and his powerful rap style. They also noted how he uses his personal feelings to make his music strong and honest.

Health and Well-being

Suga has had a few health challenges. In December 2013, he had surgery for appendicitis and needed time to recover. In December 2016, he injured his ear and took a break from performing to let it heal.

In November 2020, Suga had surgery on his left shoulder to fix an old injury. He took a break from activities to recover fully and returned to performing with BTS in January 2021.

Military Service

Like all young men in South Korea, Suga completed his mandatory military service. He began his service on September 22, 2023, working as a social worker. He was discharged on June 21, 2025.

Giving Back to the Community

Suga is very generous and has supported many good causes.

  • On his 25th birthday, he donated beef to 39 orphanages in the name of "ARMY," BTS's fans. This was a promise he made to his fans years ago.
  • For his 26th birthday, he donated 100 million Korean won and 329 BT21 Shooky dolls to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
  • In February 2020, he donated 100 million Korean won to help with efforts against the coronavirus outbreak in his hometown of Daegu.
  • In March 2021, he donated another 100 million Korean won to a hospital in Daegu to help children with cancer.
  • On his 29th birthday in March 2022, he donated 100 million Korean won to help victims of wildfires in South Korea.
  • In March 2023, he donated 100 million Korean won to Save the Children to help children in southern Turkey and northern Syria.
  • In March 2025, Suga donated 100 million Korean won to the Korean Red Cross for wildfire relief efforts.
  • In June 2025, he donated 5 billion Korean won to Severance Hospital to create a treatment center for children with autism spectrum disorder.

Suga has also spoken openly about mental health, sharing his own experiences to help others. He also supports equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
