Growing Up and Music Dreams
Cordae was born in North Carolina. He spent most of his childhood in Suitland, Maryland. When he was little, he loved music because his dad played classic hip hop artists like Rakim and Nas.
Cordae started writing his own raps when he was about 15 years old. As he got older, he spent a lot of time on YouTube, looking for music similar to what his dad played. He became very interested in becoming a rapper. Even though he focused on school, he often got sidetracked by writing lyrics.
Before he became famous, he released three mixtapes under the name "Entendre": Anxiety (2014), I'm So Anxious (2016), and I'm So Anonymous (2017). He finished high school in 2015 and went to Towson University. But he left college in 2018. He explained that college felt "bigger than him" as the first person in his family to go. He mainly went for his mom. Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles to chase his music dreams.

Starting Out and First Big Album (2014–2019)
Cordae started taking his rap career very seriously in early 2018. When he visited Los Angeles, he met up with YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay. He had connected with them online. Nahmir reached out to Cordae after hearing one of his songs. Cordae felt like he was already part of the YBN group, so he changed his name from "Entendre" to "YBN Cordae."
In May 2018, Cordae released his first single, which he called his "introduction to the world." It was a new version of Eminem's 1999 song "My Name Is." He released the song with a music video on YouTube.

Later, the YBN group announced a month-long tour in Europe. Cordae said he would release more songs until his first big music project was ready. On August 12, 2018, YBN Nahmir announced that an official YBN Mixtape with the three of them would be released on September 7, 2018.
