Early Life and School
Emily Warren grew up in New York City. She went to Trinity School from kindergarten all the way through high school. From a young age, she loved being creative. She often performed with her band, Emily Warren & the Betters. Some members of her band later formed the pop group MisterWives.
One song from The Betters album, Not at All, was even used in an MTV show called Skins. In 2011, Emily was accepted into the NYU Tisch School/Clive Davis Institute. This is a special music program. In 2013, she signed a contract as a songwriter with Prescription Songs. After graduating in 2015, she started splitting her time between Los Angeles and London. Today, she lives in Wilson, Wyoming and Los Angeles, California.
Music Career
How She Started in Music
After signing with Dr. Luke, Emily stopped working with her band, The Betters. She then spent a year living in Los Angeles. Soon after moving, she helped write "Masterpiece" for the pop artist Jessie J. This song became a hit, reaching number 30 on the US Mainstream Top 40 chart. It also earned gold awards in Australia and New Zealand.
After this success, Emily worked with her friend Scott Harris. They wrote four songs for Shawn Mendes' album, Handwritten. These songs were "Strings," "Aftertaste," "Air," and "Lost."
In September 2015, Emily sang lead vocals on "Until You Were Gone" by The Chainsmokers and Tritonal. Her singing was highly praised by Nylon magazine. The Chainsmokers also said she was "one of the best songwriters and vocalists" they had ever worked with.
Soon after, Emily teamed up with Scott Harris and The Chainsmokers again. They wrote "Don't Let Me Down". This song reached number 3 in the United States and became triple platinum. It was a huge hit for both The Chainsmokers and Daya. "Don't Let Me Down" also won a Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Dance Recording. Around the same time, Emily co-wrote and sang on "Capsize" with the duo Frenship. This song is certified platinum and has been streamed over 400 million times on Spotify.
Emily believes that writing pop music is an art. She wants to create pop music that can help make positive changes in the world. She also sang uncredited vocals on The Chainsmokers' song "Paris". They decided not to credit her so the song would introduce their new album as a "Chainsmokers thing." Emily thought it worked out well because it created a fun mystery about who was singing! In 2019, Emily, along with Ian Kirkpatrick (record producer) and Caroline Ailin, wrote the hit song "Don't Start Now" for Dua Lipa.
Becoming an Artist
Emily started to become known as an artist when she sang on Frenship's song "Capsize". She not only helped write the song but also sang on it. She performed "Capsize" live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in December 2016. This was her first time performing on TV.
On April 7, 2017, The Chainsmokers released their first album, Memories...Do Not Open. Emily was a writer on four songs from the album. She also sang lead vocals on "Don't Say" and "My Type". She provided uncredited backup vocals on "Paris". Emily was a special guest on The Chainsmokers' tour. She even performed "Paris" with them on Saturday Night Live in April 2017. The album became number 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart.
Emily released her first solo song, "Hurt By You", on May 5, 2017. It appeared on Spotify's US Viral and Global Viral charts. Her second song, "Something To Hold On To", came out on July 21, 2017. It was also featured on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist. Her song "Poking Holes" was released on October 12, 2017.
In November 2017, Emily was named one of the Forbes 30 under 30 in the music industry. This list highlights 600 young stars from different fields. Skylar Grey, a judge for the list, said Emily was chosen because her music and writing style are "so fresh." She also noted that Emily has been in the music business for a while and will likely continue to be successful.
