Early Life and Music Start
Emily Warren grew up in Manhattan, New York City. She went to Trinity School from kindergarten through high school. From a young age, she loved being creative. She often performed with her band, Emily Warren & the Betters. Some members of her band later formed the pop group MisterWives. One of their songs, "Not at All", was even featured on the TV show Skins.
In 2011, Emily was accepted into the NYU Tisch School/Clive Davis Institute. In 2013, she got a contract as a songwriter with Prescription (Rx) Songs. After graduating from university in 2015, she started splitting her time between Los Angeles and London.
Emily's Music Journey
Becoming a Songwriter
After signing with Dr. Luke, Emily Warren stopped playing with her band. She spent a year in LA. Soon after, she co-wrote "Masterpiece" for pop artist Jessie J. This song did very well, reaching number 30 on the US Mainstream Top 40 chart. It also became gold-certified in Australia and New Zealand.
After this success, Emily worked with her friend Scott Harris. They wrote four songs for Shawn Mendes' album, Handwritten. These songs were "Strings", "Aftertaste", "Air", and "Lost".
On September 18, 2015, The Chainsmokers and Tritonal released "Until You Were Gone". Emily Warren sang the lead vocals on this song. Nylon magazine praised her singing. The Chainsmokers also called her "one of the best songwriters and vocalists" they had ever worked with.
Soon after, Emily teamed up with Scott Harris and The Chainsmokers again. They wrote "Don't Let Me Down". This song reached number 3 in the United States and became triple platinum. It was a huge hit for both The Chainsmokers and Daya. "Don't Let Me Down" also won a Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Dance Recording. Around the same time, Emily co-wrote and sang on "Capsize" with the duo Frenship. This song is certified platinum and has been streamed over 400 million times on Spotify.
Emily believes that songwriting, especially for pop music, is a true art. She wants to create pop music that can help bring about positive social change. She once said that pop music can be a "powerful and crucial platform for influence and change." Emily also sang uncredited vocals on The Chainsmokers' song "Paris". She said they wanted it to be a "Chainsmokers thing" without a featured artist. But she thought it worked out well because it created a mystery about who was singing! In 2019, Emily, along with Ian Kirkpatrick (record producer) and Caroline Ailin, wrote the hit Dua Lipa song "Don't Start Now".
Emily as a Solo Artist
Emily Warren started releasing her own music with the song "Capsize" by Frenship. She not only helped write it but also sang on it. She performed "Capsize" live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 8, 2016. This was her first time performing on TV.
On April 7, 2017, The Chainsmokers released their first album, Memories...Do Not Open. Emily was a writer on four songs from the album. She also sang lead vocals on "Don't Say" and "My Type". She even provided backup vocals on "Paris". Emily was a special guest on The Chainsmokers' tour. She performed "Paris" with them on Saturday Night Live. The album became number 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart.
Emily released her first solo song, "Hurt By You", on May 5, 2017. It quickly appeared on Spotify's viral charts. Her second song, "Something To Hold On To", came out on July 21, 2017. Her song "Poking Holes" was released on October 12, 2017.
In November 2017, Emily Warren was named one of the Forbes 30 under 30 in the music industry. This list features 600 young stars from different fields. Skylar Grey, a judge for the list, said Emily was chosen because her music and writing style are "so fresh." She added that Emily is young but has been successful for a while, showing she will be "killing it for a long time."
