Musical Style and Influences

What Inspires Sabrina's Music?

Sabrina Carpenter has said that R&B music often influences her work. She named Christina Aguilera and Rihanna as her biggest musical inspirations. Carpenter mentioned that Aguilera's 2002 song "Beautiful" helped her "showcase and develop [her] own voice," saying Aguilera's singing was an inspiration. She also named Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Etta James as early musical influences. For songwriting, she looks up to Taylor Swift and Lorde. She has said that Swift's live performances and hard work inspire her. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Carpenter said that Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Aguilera were some of the artists who introduced her to pop music.

How Her Music Sounds

Early in her career, Carpenter was called a "teen pop singer." Later, she started to embrace pop music. A writer for I.D. magazine noted that after her album Emails I Can't Send, she could truly be called a "fully fledged popstar." A writer for Variety noted that while Carpenter was "considered a Disney princess for years, her transition from child actor to pop star [...] has been slow, steady and intentional." Carpenter felt that moving on from being a Disney star was hard. She told Vogue that her "prior music put forth a facet of herself that she didn't feel was authentic at the time." Her stage presence has also been praised, with a Vogue writer saying that "as an artist and performer, [Carpenter] wields the full range of human expression as if it were an instrument of its own."

Carpenter's albums include elements of folk pop, acoustic, country, electropop, and house music. Her albums after Singular: Act I have explored styles like dance-pop, trap, hip-hop, and R&B. Carpenter has said that her music has "elements of everything." In a 2024 interview with Variety, Carpenter noted that she felt disconnected from her albums before Emails I Can't Send. She said this was "largely due to the shift in who I am as a person and as an artist, pre-pandemic and post-pandemic." Alex Hopper of American Songwriter mentioned that storytelling is a common theme in Carpenter's songs. Carpenter's voice is described as a soprano.

Other Activities

Helping Others and Good Causes

Throughout her career, Carpenter has actively supported charities. In 2016, Carpenter became an ambassador for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. She visited children's hospitals across the country to help them. That same year, for the release of her song "Smoke and Fire", Carpenter sold merchandise. The money raised went to the American Red Cross's 2Steps2Minutes campaign, which teaches people about fire safety.

In 2017, Carpenter performed at the We Day California event. That same year, Carpenter worked with DoSomething's Love Letters Challenge. This project aimed to help senior citizens who might feel lonely.

In June 2024, Carpenter announced she was partnering with the nonprofit PLUS1 for her Short n' Sweet Tour. They created the Sabrina Carpenter Fund, which supports the "well-being of people and animals." It focuses on "mental health, animal welfare, and support for the LGBTQ+ community." Later that month, it was also announced that her espresso-flavored ice cream, made with Van Leeuwen, would donate fifty percent of its profits to the Ali Forney Center. This is the largest nonprofit organization in the United States that helps homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
