Sabrina's Artistic Style
Musical Inspirations
Songs by female pop artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera introduced Sabrina to pop music. Sabrina has said that R&B often influences her work, and she looks up to Christina Aguilera and Rihanna as big musical inspirations. She mentioned that Aguilera's 2002 song "Beautiful" helped her find and improve her own singing voice. She has also named Taylor Swift and Lorde as inspirations for her songwriting. She also gets ideas from Beyoncé's music, which mixes different styles. Sabrina has said that Taylor Swift's live shows and hard work have inspired her. She also looks up to Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Etta James as early musical influences. She admires Ariana Grande and is inspired by her live performances and the positive messages in her music. Critics and the media have often compared Sabrina's music and image to Ariana Grande's.
Music Sound and Songwriting
Early in her career, Sabrina was known as a "teen pop singer." Later, she started to focus more on pop music. After her album Emails I Can't Send, many people saw her as a full pop star. It was a gradual change from being a child actor to a pop star. Sabrina felt that moving on from being a Disney star was challenging, but she now has more control over her music. She said that her earlier music didn't always feel like her true self. Her performances on stage have also been praised, with people noting how she uses her full range of emotions as part of her art.
Sabrina's albums often combine pop, dance, and R&B. They also include sounds from folk-pop, acoustic, country, electropop, and house. Her albums after Singular: Act I have explored styles like dance-pop, trap, hip-hop, and R&B. Sabrina has said that her music has "elements of everything." She felt that her albums before Emails I Can't Send were different from who she is now, especially after the pandemic. Alex Hopper from American Songwriter noted that storytelling is a key part of Sabrina's songs. Sabrina's voice is described as a soprano, which means she can sing high notes.
Sabrina has helped write most of her songs. She wrote the lyrics for two songs on Emails I Can't Send all by herself. She has said in interviews that she is the main songwriter for her music. Her favorite way to write a song is to decide on the title first and then build the song from there, sharing her life experiences honestly. Producer Jack Antonoff, who worked with Sabrina on her album Short n' Sweet, praised her ability to add humor to her music and her songwriting style. He mentioned that he worked only on the music for "Sharpest Tool," while Sabrina wrote the lyrics. About Emails I Can't Send, Sabrina said, "I would hope that if someone had never listened to my music before, and they listened to this album, they would leave it feeling like they know me better as a person."
Sabrina also helped create the music for some of her songs, including "Espresso" and "Please Please Please." She can play several instruments, including the piano, bass, ukulele, guitar, and drums. She played the guitar during her performances on the Short n' Sweet Tour and played the piano and electric guitar during her Coachella performance in 2024.
