Artistic Style
Musical Influences
Sabrina Carpenter grew up listening to pop artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera. She often says that R&B music influences her work. She has named Aguilera and Rihanna as major musical inspirations. She also mentioned that Aguilera's 2002 song "Beautiful" helped her find her own voice. Sabrina has cited Taylor Swift and Lorde as influences for her songwriting. She also looks up to Beyoncé for her ability to mix different music styles. Other early influences include Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Etta James.
Music Style and Voice
Early in her career, Sabrina was known as a "teen pop singer". Later, she moved more into pop music. After her album Emails I Can't Send, she became known as a full pop star. It was challenging for her to transition from a Disney star to a pop artist, but she now has more control over her music. She feels her older music didn't always show her true self. Her stage presence is also highly praised.
Sabrina's albums include elements of folk pop, acoustic, country, electropop, and house music. Her albums after Singular: Act I have explored styles like dance-pop, trap, hip-hop, and R&B. She says her music has "elements of everything". She feels her music changed a lot after the pandemic. Sabrina's songs often tell stories. Her voice is described as a soprano.
Songwriting Process
Sabrina Carpenter has co-written most of her songs. She has said in interviews that she is the main songwriter for her music. Her favorite way to write a song is to start with the title and then build the song from there. She writes about her own life experiences in a very open way.
Producer Jack Antonoff, who worked with Sabrina on Short n' Sweet, praised her ability to add humor to her music. He compared her songwriting to ABBA. Antonoff mentioned that he worked on the music for "Sharpest Tool" while Sabrina wrote the lyrics. Sabrina hopes that when people listen to Emails I Can't Send, they will feel like they know her better as a person.
Sabrina also helps with the music composition of her songs, including "Espresso" and "Please Please Please". She can play several instruments, including the piano, bass, ukulele, guitar, and drums. She played the guitar during her Short n' Sweet Tour and played the piano and electric guitar at her Coachella performance in 2024.

Sabrina partnered with PLUS1 on the Short n' Sweet Tour to create the Sabrina Carpenter Fund. This fund supports mental health, animal welfare, and the LGBTQ+ community. It raised $1 from every tour ticket sold and reached $1 million faster than any other artist PLUS1 had worked with. Half of the money from her 2024 espresso-flavored ice cream collaboration with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream went to the Ali Forney Center, which helps homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
