Live with Kelly and Mark (often called simply Live) is a popular American talk show that airs in the mornings. It is currently hosted by Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos. The show has been on TV for a long time, starting in 1983 in New York City. Since 1988, it has been shown all over the United States.

The show first began as The Morning Show. It became very famous as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee when Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford were the hosts. Over the years, Live has won many awards, including the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show. Kelly Ripa has been a host on the show since 2001. She has co-hosted with Regis Philbin, Michael Strahan, and Ryan Seacrest. Since April 2023, she has hosted with her husband, Mark Consuelos.

About the Show

How the Show Works

The main idea of Live is like watching a friendly chat between two people. The show starts with a special part called "Host Chat." This is where the hosts talk about their lives and what's happening. It's not planned out, so it feels like a real conversation.

After the chat, there's a fun trivia game. A viewer at home gets a call and has to answer a question. If they answer correctly, they win a vacation! Someone in the studio audience also wins a prize. Sometimes, the hosts play a game with the caller first, where the caller gives two statements, and the hosts guess which one is true.

The rest of the show features interviews with famous celebrities, musical performances, and other interesting segments. These segments often cover topics like fashion, food, health, and lifestyle.

Where and When It Airs

Live! is broadcast live from New York City every weekday morning. It airs at 9 a.m. in the Eastern Time Zone. For other parts of the country, the show is played a little later. This means viewers across the U.S. can watch it at a good time for them.

The show is often seen on ABC channels. But in some areas, it might be shown on other TV channels. This helps many people watch the show.

Fun Parts of the Show

Live has many special weeks and recurring segments that viewers love. Some examples include:

  • Guinness World Record Breaker Week: Where people try to break world records.
  • New York Auto Show Week: Showing off cool new cars.
  • Broadway Week: Featuring stars and performances from Broadway shows.
  • Top Teacher Week: Honoring amazing teachers.

The show also invites "whiz kids" to challenge the hosts in things like spelling, math, or sports. When Regis Philbin was a host, he often challenged older people (sometimes over 100 years old!) to games like tennis or bowling.

Many experts also appear on the show to share tips. These include toy experts, style gurus, animal experts, and health specialists.

Special Episodes

Over the years, Live has had many fun special episodes:

  • Halloween Celebrations: The hosts dress up in many different costumes, often as famous people or characters.
  • Viewer Weddings: In 2011, the show even hosted a wedding for a couple who wrote in!
  • Moms Dream Come True Special: This special honors a group of amazing mothers.
  • Post-Oscar Special: The day after the Oscars, the show broadcasts live from Hollywood, talking about the big awards night.

Traveling the World

The Live show loves to travel! It has visited many places, including eight different countries and almost 25 states. They have broadcast from exciting locations like Hawaii, Paris, London, and even the White House. This lets viewers see different parts of the world and enjoy the show from new places.

1983–1988: The Morning Show

The show started on April 4, 1983, as The Morning Show. It was hosted by Regis Philbin and Cyndy Garvey. Later, Ann Abernathy joined as co-host. In 1985, Kathie Lee Johnson (who later became Kathie Lee Gifford) joined Regis. They had great chemistry, and the show became very popular in New York. Because it was so successful, it started being shown all over the country in 1988. At that time, its name changed to Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.

1988–2000: Live with Regis and Kathie Lee

Live with Regis and Kathie Lee quickly became a huge hit across the United States. Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford were known for their fun and playful conversations. Kathie Lee was very positive, and viewers loved her. She left the show on July 28, 2000, after being a host for many years. She said it felt like leaving family. Kathie Lee returned to the show a few times as a guest, including for Regis's farewell show.

2000–2001: Live with Regis

After Kathie Lee left, Regis Philbin hosted the show by himself for a while. Many different people came on as guest co-hosts to see who would be a good fit. This period was very popular with viewers. Regis even won an award for his hosting during this time.

Kelly Ripa auditioned for the show in November 2000. She was announced as the new official co-host on February 5, 2001.

2001–2011: Live! with Regis and Kelly

When Kelly Ripa joined, the show became even more popular with younger viewers. Many people said Kelly brought new energy to the show. Regis and Kelly hosted the annual Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade together.

After celebrating 10 years of hosting together, Regis Philbin announced in January 2011 that he would be leaving Live!. His last show was on November 18, 2011. The show celebrated his 28 years on TV with special moments from his time as host.

2011–2012: Live! with Kelly (first era)

After Regis left, the show was renamed Live! with Kelly. Kelly Ripa hosted with many different guest co-hosts from TV and entertainment. Over 60 different people joined her at the desk during this time.

In 2012, the show got a new, modern set. It was the first big change to the studio in many years.

2012–2016: Live with Kelly and Michael

On September 4, 2012, Michael Strahan became Kelly Ripa's permanent co-host. Michael was a famous football player for the New York Giants. He continued to work on Fox NFL Sunday while co-hosting Live. Kelly and Michael's partnership was very successful, and the show became one of the most-watched talk shows.

In April 2016, it was announced that Michael Strahan would leave Live to work full-time on Good Morning America. Kelly Ripa was not told about this decision beforehand, which caused some discussion. Michael's last show on Live was on May 13, 2016.

2016–2017: Live with Kelly (second era)

After Michael Strahan left, Kelly Ripa hosted the show by herself again, with different guest co-hosts joining her each day. Jimmy Kimmel was her first guest co-host during this time.

2017–2023: Live with Kelly and Ryan

On May 1, 2017, Ryan Seacrest was announced as the new permanent co-host, joining Kelly Ripa. He also became an executive producer for the show. In September 2017, Live got a new, modern logo and updated its studio look.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, the show started broadcasting from the hosts' homes. In August 2020, the show returned to its New York City studio, but without a live audience at first.

2023-present: Live with Kelly and Mark

On February 16, 2023, Ryan Seacrest announced he would be leaving Live. He explained that traveling between Los Angeles (where he lives) and New York City (where the show is taped) was too much. Mark Consuelos, Kelly Ripa's husband, was then announced as Ryan's replacement. The last episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan aired on April 14, 2023. The first episode of Live with Kelly and Mark premiered on April 17, 2023.
