Early Life and Family
Finn Wolfhard was born on December 23, 2002, in Vancouver, Canada. His family has French, German, and Jewish roots. He went to a Catholic school.
His father, Eric Wolfhard, is a researcher who works on land claims for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Finn has an older brother named Nick Wolfhard, who is also an actor.
Acting Career
Getting Started
Finn's first acting job was in a music video in 2012 for a band called Facts. In 2014, he appeared on TV for the first time in the science fiction show The 100. The next year, he had a role in the popular series Supernatural.
Breakthrough with Stranger Things
In 2016, Finn became a star when he was cast as Mike Wheeler in the Netflix hit Stranger Things. He sent in a video audition to get the part. For their work on the show, Finn and the other cast members won a SAG Award. The cast even competed on the show Lip Sync Battle in 2017.
Success in Movies
Finn's first big movie role was as Richie Tozier in the 2017 horror film It, based on a book by Stephen King. It was a coincidence that both Stranger Things and It were set in the 1980s. He had to audition twice for the role of Richie because the movie's director changed.
In 2019, Finn appeared in several big projects. He was the voice of "Player" in the Netflix animated series Carmen Sandiego. He also returned as young Richie in It Chapter Two and played Young Boris in the movie The Goldfinch. To get the part of Boris, who is Ukrainian, Finn learned to speak with a nearly perfect Russian accent for his audition. He also voiced Pugsley Addams in the animated movie The Addams Family.
Recent Roles and Directing
In 2021, Finn starred in Ghostbusters: Afterlife as Trevor, the grandson of one of the original Ghostbusters. He returned to this role in the 2024 sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
At just 17 years old, Finn directed his first short film, a comedy called Night Shifts (2020). In 2023, he co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in his first full-length movie, Hell of a Summer, with his friend Billy Bryk.
He has also done a lot of voice acting, including for the animated shows Smiling Friends and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022).
Music Career
Finn was the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the rock band Calpurnia. The band was together until November 2019.
Soon after, he started a new band called The Aubreys with his former Calpurnia bandmate, drummer Malcolm Craig. The Aubreys released their first EP, Soda & Pie, in 2020. Their first full album, Karaoke Alone, came out in 2021.
In June 2025, Finn released his first solo album, called Happy Birthday.
Charity Work
Finn uses his fame to help others. He supports causes for autism awareness and Indigenous children. In 2017, he hosted a benefit concert called "Strange 80s" to raise money for musicians who need help with medical bills.
