Barry Keoghan (pronounced KYOH-gən; born 18 October 1992) is an Irish actor. He has won a BAFTA Award. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. In 2020, The Irish Times newspaper named him one of Ireland's greatest film actors.
Barry Keoghan started acting in 2011. He became well-known in 2017 for his roles in Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. He was praised for his acting in Calm with Horses (2019) and The Green Knight (2021). He then joined big movies like the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals (2021), where he played Druig.
In 2022, he acted in The Banshees of Inisherin. For this role, he won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Keoghan then starred in the movie Saltburn (2023). This role earned him nominations for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award.

Early Life and Education
Barry Keoghan was born on 18 October 1992. He grew up in Summerhill, Dublin, Ireland. When he was young, he and his brother Eric lived in foster care for seven years. They stayed in 13 different foster homes. Later, they were raised by their grandmother, aunt, and older sister.
As a child, Keoghan took part in school plays at the O'Connell School in Dublin. He learned about films by watching movies at Cineworld. After acting in Between the Canals, he studied acting at The Factory. This is a drama school in Dublin, now called Bow Street Academy.
Acting Career
Early Roles and First Success
Keoghan started his acting career in 2011. He saw an advertisement in a shop window for a film called Between the Canals. He got a small part as a character named Aido. The movie was released in 2011. When he was 18, he appeared in the Irish TV show Fair City.
In 2013, Keoghan played Wayne in the TV series Love/Hate. This role made him well-known in Ireland. He then appeared in films like '71 (2014), Mammal (2016), and Trespass Against Us (2016).
In 2017, Keoghan was in two important films. He played George Mills in Dunkirk. He also starred as Martin Lang in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. He won an Irish Film and Television Award for his role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The next year, he appeared in Black '47 as Hobson. He also starred in American Animals, playing Spencer Reinhart. This film was based on a true story about a book theft. In 2018, The Hollywood Reporter called Keoghan "the next big thing" in movies.

In 2019, Barry Keoghan appeared in the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. His film Calm With Horses was shown at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Keoghan was in Matt Reeves's film The Batman (2022). He was listed as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner," who was later confirmed to be the Joker. After the film came out, a deleted scene showing Keoghan's Joker and Robert Pattinson's Batman was released. Keoghan received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin (2022). He also won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this film.
In 2023, Keoghan played the main character, Oliver Quick, in the movie Saltburn. He received great reviews for his acting. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor. In 2024, he appeared in Bird, which was shown at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Keoghan was chosen to play Ringo Starr in a series of four movies about the Beatles. These films are planned to be released in April 2028.
Personal Life
Barry Keoghan enjoys boxing as a hobby. He supports the Manchester United football team. In March 2022, Keoghan became a special representative for the Barretstown children's charity. He helped open their new Aladina Studio. In March 2024, the fashion company Burberry also named Keoghan as their brand ambassador.
In September 2021, Keoghan started a relationship with Alyson Kierans. Their son was born in August 2022. Their relationship ended in mid-2023.
