Story of Rebellion

Rebellion tells the story of fictional people living in Dublin, Ireland, during the 1916 Rising. The show starts when World War I begins. At first, people thought the war would be short. But as it continued, things became unstable in Ireland.

This led to a rise in Irish nationalism, which is the idea that Ireland should be an independent country. The show lets you see these big events through the eyes of friends from Dublin, Belfast, and London. They all play different and sometimes difficult roles in Ireland's fight for independence.

Making the Show

The series was directed by Finnish director Aku Louhimies. The story was written by the show's creator, Colin Teevan.

In 2014, RTÉ received €400,000 in funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. In May 2015, RTÉ announced they would make a drama series. This was to remember the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising. The show was filmed in Dublin during the summer of 2015.

In December 2015, RTÉ said the series would start airing in early January. The show cost 6 million to make. This made it the most expensive drama series ever produced by the public broadcaster at that time.

In 2016, RTÉ and Zodiac Media, the company that made Rebellion, announced they would create a sequel. This new series would be set during the War of Independence. The sequel, called Resistance, came out in 2019. It stars Brian Gleeson and Gavin Drea. Resistance begins with British police trying to catch Irish leader Michael Collins and his men.
