Julia Carin Michaels (born November 13, 1993) is an American singer and songwriter. She is known for writing many hit songs for other famous artists. She has also released her own popular songs, like "Issues." Julia has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, including for Song of the Year and Best New Artist. She has also received nominations from the MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards.
Julia was born in Iowa and grew up in California. She started writing songs for other singers when she was just 16 years old. After becoming very successful as a songwriter, she signed with Republic Records. In 2017, she released her first song as a singer, called "Issues." This song reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became very popular. She then released her EP (Extended Play) called Nervous System in 2017, and Inner Monologue Part 1 in 2019. Her first full album, Not in Chronological Order, came out in 2021.
As a songwriter, Julia Michaels has written songs for many well-known artists. These include Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, and Gwen Stefani. Early Life and Start in Music
Julia Michaels was born in Davenport, Iowa. When she was young, her family moved to Santa Clarita, California, which is near Los Angeles. Her older sister, Jaden, is also a songwriter. Julia started singing when she was 12 years old.
When she was 14, Julia met a songwriter named Joleen Belle. Together, they wrote the theme song for the Disney Channel show Austin & Ally. They also wrote many other songs for TV shows and movies. At 19, Julia met Lindy Robbins. They wrote songs like "Fire Starter" for Demi Lovato and "Miss Movin' On" for Fifth Harmony.
Julia Michaels has said that she gets her inspiration from artists like Fiona Apple and Paramore. By the time she was 20, she met her songwriting partner, Justin Tranter. They often work together and have written songs for big artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Julia also performed the song "Carry Me" with the musician Kygo at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

At the 2018 Grammy Awards, Julia was nominated for two awards: Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Issues." In February 2018, her song "Heaven" was released as part of the soundtrack for the movie Fifty Shades Freed. She also released "Jump" with Trippie Redd in May 2018. Julia opened for Niall Horan's Flicker World Tour in Europe in 2018.
From May to October 2018, Julia was the opening act for Maroon 5's Red Pill Blues Tour in North America. She also worked with Lauv on the song "There's No Way." In November 2018, she sang "In This Place" for the Disney movie Ralph Breaks the Internet.
In December 2018, Julia was featured on 5 Seconds of Summer's song, "Lie to Me." This song became popular in many countries.
In early 2019, Julia opened for Keith Urban on his Graffiti U World Tour in Australia. On January 24, 2019, she released her EP, Inner Monologue Part 1. She later hinted at songs from Inner Monologue Part 2, like "17" and "Falling for Boys."
In 2020, Julia appeared on the TV show Songland and released the song "Give It to You." On October 1, 2020, she released "Lie Like This," which was the first song from her first full album. Her debut album, Not in Chronological Order, was released on April 30, 2021.
In 2023, Julia co-wrote songs for the Disney animated movie, Wish. She also sang on NF's song "Gone" from his album Hope. In 2024, she was featured on the song "Want This Beer" by Josh Ross. In August 2024, Julia announced that she is now an independent artist, meaning she manages her own music career without a major record label.
Personal Life
Julia Michaels has had relationships with other musicians she has worked with. She dated fellow artist Lauv for a few months in late 2018 after they collaborated on the song "There's No Way."
In July 2019, Julia started dating Canadian musician JP Saxe. Their relationship began after they worked together on the duet "If the World Was Ending." They broke up in September 2022. Since July 2022, Julia has been in a relationship with tattoo artist Mat Rule.
