Julia Carin Michaels, born on November 13, 1993, is a talented American singer and songwriter. She is known for writing many hit songs for other famous artists. Julia has also released her own music. She has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, which are very important music awards. These nominations include awards for Song of the Year and Best New Artist. She has also received nominations from the MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards.
Julia was born in Iowa and grew up in California. She started writing songs for other artists when she was just 16 years old. Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Julia Michaels was born in Davenport, Iowa. She later moved to Santa Clarita, California, which is near Los Angeles, with her family. Her older sister, Jaden, is also a songwriter. Julia's father is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent. He changed his name to John Michaels to become an actor.
Julia started singing when she was 12 years old. When she was 14, she met a songwriter named Joleen Belle. Together, they wrote the theme song for the Disney Channel show Austin & Ally. They also wrote many other songs for TV shows and movies. At 19, Julia met Lindy Robbins. They wrote "Fire Starter" for Demi Lovato and "Miss Movin' On" for Fifth Harmony.
Julia has mentioned that she gets inspiration from artists like Fiona Apple, Lisa Mitchell, Laura Marling, Missy Higgins, Paramore, Juliet Simms, Sarah Blasko, and The Fray. She had been writing songs for the Hollywood music scene since she was 16. By the time she was 20, she met her songwriting partner, Justin Tranter. In January 2017, Julia Michaels released her first song as a solo artist, "Issues". She said that many famous artists wanted to sing this song, but she decided to keep it for herself. She felt it was the first song she wrote that truly sounded like her. In April 2017, her new song "How Do We Get Back to Love" was first heard on the TV show Girls. At the 2018 Grammy Awards, Julia was nominated for two awards: Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Issues". On February 8, 2018, her song "Heaven" was released. It was part of the soundtrack for a film. On May 4, 2018, she released "Jump" which featured Trippie Redd. From May 30 to October 15, 2018, Julia Michaels opened for Maroon 5's Red Pill Blues Tour in North America. On October 1, 2020, Julia Michaels released the song "Lie Like This". This was the first song from her first full album. On March 26, 2021, "All Your Exes" was released. On April 14, Julia announced that her album would be called Not in Chronological Order, and it was released on April 30, 2021.
In 2023, she helped write songs for the Disney animated movie, Wish. Julia was also featured on NF's song "Gone" from his 2023 album Hope. In 2024, she was featured on the song "Want This Beer" by Josh Ross.
In August 2024, Julia Michaels shared on Instagram that she is now an independent artist. This means she is not signed to a major record label anymore.
Personal Life
Julia Michaels was in a three-year relationship with music producer Sir Nolan. She wrote Clean Bandit's song "I Miss You" about him.
After working together on the song "There's No Way", Julia and fellow artist Lauv were in a relationship for several months in late 2018.
In July 2019, Julia started dating Canadian musician JP Saxe. Their relationship began after they worked together on the duet "If the World Was Ending". In September 2022, it was reported that they had broken up.
Since July 2022, Julia Michaels has been in a relationship with tattoo artist Mat Rule. They announced their engagement in April 2025.
