Adam Levine's Early Life
Adam Noah Levine was born on March 18, 1979, in Los Angeles, California. His father, Fredric Levine, started a retail store chain. His mother, Patsy Levine, worked as an admissions counselor. His parents separated when he was seven years old. Adam spent weekdays with his mother and weekends with his father. He has a younger brother.
Adam Levine's father and grandfather were Jewish. His grandmother was a Protestant. Adam is Jewish. He describes his family as very musical. He says his mother helped him start his music path. He also credits artists like Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles for shaping his music style.
Adam went to Brentwood School. There, he met Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden. They would later become his bandmates. He loved music in high school. He felt music was his main focus.
Kara's Flowers: The First Band
In February 1994, Adam Levine and his friends Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick formed a band called Kara's Flowers. In 1995, they played their first show at the Whisky a Go Go club in West Hollywood. Adam was the singer and guitarist.
An independent producer named Tommy Allen discovered the band. They recorded an 11-song album. They later signed with Reprise Records. In August 1997, the band released their first album, The Fourth World. They also appeared on the TV show Beverly Hills, 90210.
Despite high hopes, the album did not sell well. Reprise Records decided to drop the band. Adam later said that the band tried to become famous too quickly.
Maroon 5: A New Beginning
After Kara's Flowers broke up, Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael moved to New York for college. Adam said this time helped him discover hip-hop and R&B music. They left college after one semester. They reunited with Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick to form a new band.
They tried different music styles, like country and folk. They decided to focus on groove-based music. The band made a demo, but many record labels rejected it. Finally, Octone Records showed interest. The label suggested adding a fifth member, James Valentine. The band was then renamed Maroon 5.
Adam Levine was working as a writer's assistant for a TV show called Judging Amy. While working, he wrote songs about his ex-girlfriend. These songs became part of Maroon 5's first album, Songs About Jane, released in June 2002. The album slowly became popular. It sold about 10 million copies and was a top-selling album in 2004.
In 2005, Maroon 5 won their first Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The next year, they won another Grammy for their song "This Love".
In 2006, the band started recording again. In May 2007, Maroon 5 released their second album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. Adam described it as a much better album. They went on a tour to support the album. The album and its songs received Grammy nominations.
After a world tour, the band started recording their third album in 2009. They worked with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Adam said Lange made him work very hard. In 2010, Maroon 5 released Hands All Over. The album did not do as well as expected at first.
Then, the band released "Moves like Jagger" with Christina Aguilera. Adam called it a "risk." The song became a huge worldwide hit. It was one of the best-selling digital songs of 2011. Adam later said the song "totally revived the band."
Because "Moves Like Jagger" was a success, Maroon 5 worked with other writers for their next album, Overexposed. Adam said it was their most dance-focused album. The album and its first song "Payphone" received Grammy nominations. The band toured from 2012 to 2014 to support Overexposed.
In 2014, Maroon 5 released their fifth album, V (pronounced "five"). They continued working with the same songwriters. Adam said they found songs they loved and made them their own. Five songs were released from this album. The band started their Maroon V Tour in 2015.
In 2007, Adam had thought Maroon 5 might stop making music after one more album. But in 2010, he said the band had no plans to break up. He also said he would never have a solo career. On February 10, 2017, Adam Levine received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This honored his contributions to music.

Adam Levine's Musical Style
Adam Levine's interest in music began around age ten when he started playing guitar. He found music to be a way to express his feelings. He played his first professional show at The Troubadour when he was twelve. He was so nervous that he played with his back to the audience.
Growing up, he was influenced by many artists. These included The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and Nirvana. In high school, he listened to Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. He has also used elements from The Police and Prince in his music. Adam loves all kinds of music, from pop to jazz.
Listening to "Are You That Somebody?" by Aaliyah inspired him to explore a more soulful sound. Moving to New York introduced him to hip-hop, R&B, and gospel. He changed his music style, often trying to sound like Stevie Wonder. Maroon 5's first album, Songs About Jane, was described as "bluesy funk."
Adam does not like to put his music into one specific genre. He says there is too much variety in music to stick to one style. He writes songs about common themes like love and relationships. He tries to be direct with his lyrics.
Adam Levine has a wide vocal range. He is known for his falsetto singing. Critics have praised his voice, calling it "R&B-slick" and "soulful." Reviewers also note his energetic stage presence.
Adam's popularity has made him a "stand-alone star." Some say this has put other Maroon 5 members in the background. However, others believe his fame has helped the band. Their guitarist, James Valentine, said Adam's vocals are central to their music. Adam says the band decided he should be the frontman to help them succeed.

Adam Levine and Jonah Hill have been friends since they were young. Adam has also been friends with actress Kate Hudson since they were teenagers.
