Career Highlights
Starting in Comedy and Film
Andy Samberg studied experimental film in college. He became popular online by making his own funny videos with his friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. When YouTube started in 2005, their videos became even more widely seen. This helped him get an agent and eventually join Saturday Night Live.
Before joining Saturday Night Live, Samberg was already part of the comedy group the Lonely Island with Taccone and Schaffer. The three started writing for Saturday Night Live in 2005. They released their first album, Incredibad, in 2009. Samberg has also appeared in many movies, commercials, and music videos. He even hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.
In 2012, Samberg gave a speech at Harvard University. That same year, he starred with Adam Sandler in the movie That's My Boy. He also voiced the character Jonathan in Hotel Transylvania and its sequels, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. In 2013, he got the main role of Detective Jake Peralta in the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show first aired on September 17, 2013. Samberg won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2014 for his role as Peralta. He also hosted the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015 and co-hosted the 76th Golden Globe Awards in 2019.
In 2016, Samberg and the Lonely Island performed their song "I'm on a Boat" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They used classroom instruments for the performance.
Time on Saturday Night Live
In September 2005, Samberg joined Saturday Night Live (SNL) as a featured player and writer. He was in many pre-recorded sketches, which are short comedy videos. On December 17, 2005, he and fellow cast member Chris Parnell starred in the Digital Short called "Lazy Sunday". This was a hip hop song about wanting to see a movie. The short became very popular online and brought Samberg a lot of attention.
His comedy group's song with T-Pain, "I'm on a Boat", was viewed over 56 million times on YouTube after it came out in 2009. The song was even nominated for a Grammy Award. Samberg left SNL on June 1, 2012. However, he returned to host the show's Season 39 finale in 2014 and the 40th anniversary special. He also came back in 2024 to play Doug Emhoff and for more Digital Shorts.
Other Projects
In November 2023, the first issue of a comic book called Holy Roller was released. Andy Samberg helped write this comic. It's about a pro bowler who becomes a Jewish superhero using trick bowling balls.
Samberg also co-hosts The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. On this podcast, he and his friends discuss the Lonely Island's SNL Digital Shorts.

Andy Samberg is married to musician Joanna Newsom. He was a big fan of her music before they met at one of her concerts in 2006. They dated for five years, and Samberg asked her to marry him in February 2013. They got married on September 21, 2013, in Big Sur, California. His Saturday Night Live co-star Seth Meyers was his groomsman.
