Andy Samberg (born David A. J. Samberg on August 18, 1978) is a well-known American comedian, actor, and musician. He is also a writer and producer. He is famous for being part of the comedy music group the Lonely Island. His friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are also in the group.
Samberg was a cast member and writer for the TV show Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 2005 to 2012. On SNL, he and his group helped make the "SNL Digital Shorts" very popular.
He has starred in many movies, including Hot Rod (2007) and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films (2009–2013). He also voiced characters in the Hotel Transylvania movie series (2012–2022). From 2013 to 2021, he played Jake Peralta in the police comedy show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He also produced this show. For his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2013.

Early Life and School
Andy Samberg was born in Berkeley, California, on August 18, 1978. His mother, Marjorie, was a teacher, and his father, Joe, is a photographer. He has two sisters, Johanna and Darrow. When he was five years old, he decided he wanted to change his name to Andy.
Samberg grew up in a Jewish family. He has said he is "not particularly religious." He also has some Italian family background. He went to elementary school with Chelsea Peretti, who later became his co-star on Brooklyn Nine Nine.
He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1996. There, he became very interested in creative writing. He said writing classes were where he put all his effort. He went to University of California, Santa Cruz for two years. Then, he transferred to New York University (NYU)'s Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated from NYU in 2000.

Acting and Comedy Videos
Samberg studied experimental film in college. He became famous online by making funny videos with his friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. When YouTube started in 2005, their videos became very popular. His work on their comedy website, TheLonelyIsland.com, helped him get an agent. This eventually led to him being hired at Saturday Night Live.
The trio, known as the Lonely Island, started writing for Saturday Night Live in 2005. They released their first album, Incredibad, in 2009. Samberg has also appeared in movies, commercials, and music videos. He even hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.
In 2012, Samberg gave a speech at Harvard University. That same year, he starred with Adam Sandler in the movie That's My Boy. He also voiced the main character, Jonathan, in Hotel Transylvania. He continued this role in the sequels, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
In 2013, he got the role of Detective Jake Peralta in the police comedy show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show first aired in September 2013. Samberg won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2014 for his role as Jake Peralta. He also hosted the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015. In 2019, he co-hosted the 76th Golden Globe Awards with Sandra Oh.
Saturday Night Live
In September 2005, Samberg joined Saturday Night Live (SNL) as a performer and writer. In his first year, he was in many pre-recorded skits. These included funny commercials and other video segments. On December 17, 2005, he starred with Chris Parnell in the "Lazy Sunday" Digital Short. This was a hip hop song about wanting to see a movie. The short became very popular online and got Samberg a lot of attention.
He continued to gain praise, especially for "Dick in a Box". This was a duet with Justin Timberlake that won an Emmy Award. The music video for "I'm on a Boat", a song with his comedy group and T-Pain, had over 56 million views on YouTube. This song was nominated for a Grammy Award. Another Digital Short, "Motherlover", also with Justin Timberlake, came out for Mother's Day in 2009.
Samberg left SNL on June 1, 2012. He later returned to host the show's Season 39 finale in 2014. He also hosted the 40th anniversary special's Digital Short.
Other Projects
In 2023, the first issue of a comic book called Holy Roller was released. Samberg helped write this comic. It is about a pro bowler who becomes a Jewish superhero.
Samberg also co-hosts The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. On the podcast, he, Schaffer, Taccone, and Seth Meyers talk about The Lonely Island's SNL Digital Shorts.
Personal Life
Andy Samberg is married to musician Joanna Newsom. He was a big fan of her music before they met at one of her concerts. They dated for five years, and Samberg proposed in February 2013. They got married on September 21, 2013, in Big Sur, California. His Saturday Night Live co-star Seth Meyers was his groomsman.
In August 2017, they announced the birth of their daughter. In February 2023, it was announced they had a second child, a boy.
Samberg grew up in the East Bay area of California. He is a fan of the Oakland Athletics baseball team and the Golden State Warriors basketball team.
