Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a 2022 American live-action and animated adventure comedy film. It is based on the famous characters Chip and Dale. The movie also continues the story from the 1989 animated TV series.

The film was directed by Akiva Schaffer. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand wrote the story. John Mulaney and Andy Samberg voice the main characters, Chip and Dale. Other stars include KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, and Seth Rogen.

The movie takes place in a special world. In this world, cartoon characters live right alongside humans. Chip and Dale's TV show was canceled thirty years ago. They had a big disagreement back then. Now, they must work together again. They need to find their friend Monterey Jack, who has gone missing.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers first showed in Hollywood on May 16, 2022. It was released in the United States on May 20, 2022. You can watch it on Disney+ as an original film. Critics mostly liked the movie. They praised its humor, the voice acting, and its clever references to other cartoons. The film even won an award for Outstanding Television Movie at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Movie Story: Chip and Dale's New Adventure

In a world where humans and cartoon characters live together, two chipmunks, Chip and Dale, become best friends in elementary school. They move to Hollywood and become stars. They get their own popular TV show called Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers in the early 1990s.

However, Dale decides to get his own show, Double-O-Dale. This causes a big fight between the two friends. Both of their shows end up getting canceled.

Thirty Years Later: A New Mystery

Thirty years later, Chip works as a successful insurance salesman. He is a bit tired of his old life. Dale, on the other hand, spends his time at fan conventions. He even had "CGI surgery" to look more modern.

One night, their old friend Monterey Jack calls them. Monty, who loves stinky cheese, owes money to a group called the Valley Gang. He warns Chip and Dale about a scary operation. Toons are being kidnapped, changed, and sent overseas. They are forced to make fake versions of their old shows for the rest of their lives.

Later that night, Monty himself is kidnapped! Chip and Dale meet Police Captain Putty and Officer Ellie Steckler. Ellie is a huge fan of their old show. Since the police can't do much, she suggests Chip and Dale investigate on their own.

Investigating the Valley Gang

Chip and Dale visit Bjornson the Cheesemonger, who sold cheese to Monty. They ask about the Valley Gang. They are led to a strange part of town called the uncanny valley. There, they meet the gang's leader, Sweet Pete. Sweet Pete is a cartoon actor who used to play Peter Pan, but he's now an adult. His helpers are Bob and Jimmy.

Sweet Pete realizes Chip and Dale are looking into his illegal cartoon business. He tries to catch them, but the chipmunks manage to escape. They tell Ellie what they found. They learn that Ellie is not trusted by Captain Putty. She once followed a bad tip and raided a TV studio, which caused problems.

A Dangerous Discovery

With Ellie's help, Chip and Dale sneak into a bathhouse. They want to steal Sweet Pete's fitness tracker. They use it to follow his movements to a dock warehouse. But by the time the police arrive, the warehouse is empty.

Inside, they find a huge machine. This machine is designed to change cartoon characters' bodies. They also find parts of other toons, including Monty's famous mustache.

Back at the police station, Chip and Dale argue about Monty and their past fight. But then, they smell Monty's cologne! They realize either Captain Putty or Ellie is working with Sweet Pete. They quickly leave the station.

The Final Showdown

At a Fan Con, they try to get help from Ugly Sonic. He has FBI contacts. But Sweet Pete and his helpers arrive, tracking Dale through his social media posts. During the chase, Bob is caught and arrested. But Chip is grabbed by Jimmy and taken to the warehouse.

Ellie is also tricked into going to the warehouse by Captain Putty. Putty reveals he is part of the Valley Gang. He has been helping Sweet Pete and even gave Ellie the bad tip earlier.

Sweet Pete makes Ellie call Dale to lure him to the warehouse. But Ellie sends a secret message using a Rescue Rangers episode. Dale understands Ellie is in danger. He calls their old Rescue Rangers co-stars, Gadget Hackwrench and Zipper. They are now married with children!

Dale enters the warehouse using a firework. The firework gets stuck in the machine, stopping it just before it can be used on Chip. The machine goes wild, turning Jimmy into a fairy and Sweet Pete into a giant mix of different cartoons. Ellie fights and defeats Putty. Pete chases Chip and Dale through the warehouse, which is also where the fake cartoons are filmed. The chipmunks use a trick from a Rescue Rangers episode to trap Pete at the docks.

Rescue and Reunion

The FBI, led by Ugly Sonic, arrives to arrest the Valley Gang. Sweet Pete fires a cannonball at Chip, but Dale jumps in front of it. Chip thinks Dale is gone and apologizes for their past. But Dale reveals he was saved by a golden pog Chip gave him.

The chipmunks free all the kidnapped toons, including Monty. Dale introduces the Rescue Rangers to Ellie. She decides to open her own detective agency. As the team leaves, Dale convinces them to film a new Rescue Rangers show. It becomes a huge success!

Behind the Scenes: Making the Movie

Visual Effects and Animation

The visual effects and animation for the film were done by Moving Picture Company (MPC). Even though many characters are hand-drawn, Chip, Dale, and Sweet Pete were made with computer animation. They were given a special "cel-shaded" look to appear like classic hand-drawn cartoons. This helped with time and budget.

MPC also worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. This allowed them to use the model for Ugly Sonic in this film. An animator from the original Who Framed Roger Rabbit movie even helped animate Roger Rabbit's cameo.

Music of the Film

Brian Tyler composed the music for the film. The famous theme song from the original TV show was written by Mark Mueller. Post Malone recorded a new version of the theme song for the movie.

The soundtrack album was released on May 20, 2022. The song "Best Friend" by Saweetie and Doja Cat was used in the movie's trailers.
