Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper (born July 2, 1993), known as Saweetie, is an American rapper. She became famous in 2017 with her first song, "Icy Grl". This song was very popular and sold over two million copies. It helped her sign a record deal with Warner Records.
Her first music collection, called an extended play (EP), was High Maintenance (2018). Her second EP, Icy (2019), had the hit song "My Type". This song reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over four million copies. Later, her songs "Tap In" (2020) and "Best Friend" (2021), which featured Doja Cat, both made it into the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Best Friend" was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance. Saweetie herself was nominated for Best New Artist at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Her first full album, Pretty ... Music, is expected in 2025.

Saweetie's Early Life and School
Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper was born on July 2, 1993, in Santa Clara, California. Her mother, Trinidad Valentin, has Filipino and Chinese roots. Her father, Johnny Harper, is Black American. Saweetie grew up in Hayward and later in Sacramento. She went to Merrill F. West High School and graduated from Monterey Trail High School.
Saweetie started writing music when she was 13 years old. After high school, she studied communication and business at San Diego State University. She then moved to the University of Southern California. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication in 2016. After graduating, she decided to focus on her music career.
Saweetie's Music Career
Starting Out: 2016–2018
Saweetie began sharing short rap videos on her Instagram in 2016. One video showed her rapping over a song by another artist. This rap later became her hit song "Icy Grl". She released "Icy Grl" on SoundCloud in 2017. This song caught the attention of Max Gousse, a music producer who became her manager. The music video for "Icy Grl" became very popular online.
In October 2017, she released a video for her song "Focus". In January 2018, she was named "Artist of the Week" by Tidal. She was also featured in an advertisement for Rihanna's Fenty Beauty makeup brand. In February 2018, Saweetie signed with Warner Bros. Records. She also started her own record label, Icy Records, that same month.
Saweetie released her first major EP, High Maintenance, on March 16, 2018. It had nine songs. Her song "Icy Girl" sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. by June 2018. By September 2019, it had sold even more and reached number one on Billboard's rhythmic songs chart.
More Hits: 2019–2020
Saweetie released her second EP, Icy, on March 29, 2019. The first song from this EP was "My Type". This song used a sample from a 2004 song called "Freek-a-Leek". "My Type" was Saweetie's first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It reached number 21 and became a big hit. A new version of the song with Jhené Aiko and City Girls was released later. "My Type" reached number one on the Rhythmic Radio charts and sold millions of copies.
In September 2019, Saweetie worked with the clothing company PrettyLittleThing. They launched a collection of 59 clothing items called PrettyLittleThing x Saweetie. She wanted the collection to show a "rich girl enjoying the finer things in life." The collection was shown during New York Fashion Week. Saweetie also appeared on the TV show Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out in January 2020.
Recent Projects: 2020–Present
Saweetie released "Tap In" on June 20, 2020. This song was the first single from her upcoming album. "Tap In" reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also entered the UK Singles Chart. In September 2020, "Tap In" became number one on the Urban Radio Chart. A remix of "Tap In" with Post Malone, DaBaby, and Jack Harlow was released in August 2020.
On July 31, 2020, Saweetie was featured on Tay Money's song "Bussin 2.0". She also appeared on Ava Max's song "Kings & Queens, Pt. 2" in August 2020. On October 23, 2020, she released "Back to the Streets" with Jhené Aiko. The song "Best Friend" featuring Doja Cat was released on January 7, 2021.
In 2020, Saweetie was recognized on Forbes' "30 Under 30 Music" list. She also started working with beauty brands. In October 2020, she launched "Icy University," a series of online educational videos.
By March 2021, Saweetie had also launched her own jewelry line. She also created a makeup collection with Morphe. Other partnerships include a collection with Sinful Colors and the "Saweetie Meal" at McDonald's in August 2021. Saweetie also started acting. She played the character Indigo in three episodes of the TV show Grown-ish.
In April 2021, Saweetie released the EP Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1. It included songs like "Risky" and "Talkin' Bout". On April 30, 2021, Saweetie worked with the British girl group Little Mix on a remix of their song "Confetti". This song reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart. On May 7, 2021, Saweetie released "Fast (Motion)".
In November 2021, Saweetie hosted a comedy special on Netflix. On November 19, she released the song "Icy Chain". She performed this song on Saturday Night Live the next day. In January 2022, Saweetie was part of a campaign for MAC Cosmetics with Cher.
On November 18, 2022, Saweetie released her fourth EP, The Single Life. In July 2023, it was announced that Saweetie would go on tour with YG and Tyga. However, the tour was later canceled.
On May 30, 2024, Saweetie made a surprise appearance at a professional wrestling event in Los Angeles. On August 1, 2024, her music video for "My Best" was released. It was filmed at her old high school and she directed it herself.
Saweetie's Family and Personal Life
Saweetie is related to actress Gabrielle Union. Her grandfather, Willie Harper, played football for the San Francisco 49ers. Her uncle, Josh Harper, also played football for the Fresno State Bulldogs.
Saweetie dated fellow rapper Quavo from the group Migos starting in September 2018. They were often seen together. On March 19, 2021, Saweetie announced on social media that they were no longer together.
