The Story of Hotel Transylvania

Dracula's Safe Haven

The story begins in 1895. Count Dracula loses his wife, Martha, because of an angry human mob. After this sad event, Dracula decides to build a huge, fancy hotel. This hotel is only for monsters. He builds it in Transylvania.

Dracula raises his daughter, Mavis, in this hotel. It becomes a safe place for monsters. They can escape from humans who might try to hurt them. Many famous monsters often stay there. These include Frankenstein and his wife Eunice. Also, Wayne and Wanda Werewolf and their big family visit. Griffin the Invisible Man and Murray the Mummy are also frequent guests.

A Human Guest Arrives

In the present day, it's Mavis's 118th birthday. Dracula finally lets Mavis leave the castle to see the human world. But he has a secret plan. He uses his zombie bellhops to pretend to be scary humans. He hopes they will frighten Mavis and make her want to come home.

His plan works, but there's a problem. The zombies accidentally lead a 21-year-old human, Jonathan "Johnny" Loughran, back to the hotel. Dracula is very worried. He quickly disguises Johnny as a monster. He tells everyone Johnny is Frank's cousin, "Johnnystein."

Mavis and Johnny's "Zing"

Jonathan soon meets Mavis. They feel a special connection, which monsters call a "Zing." Dracula can't get Johnny out of the hotel without anyone noticing. So, he quickly says Johnny is a party planner. He claims Johnny is there to make his old-fashioned parties more exciting.

Johnny quickly becomes popular with the other monsters. But this makes Dracula very upset and worried. Dracula tells Johnny to leave. However, Mavis brings him back. Johnny shows Mavis the beauty of a sunrise. This makes Mavis want to give humans another chance.

Quasimodo's Discovery

Meanwhile, the hotel chef, Quasimodo, has a pet rat named Esmeralda. Quasimodo finds out that Johnny is a human. He then kidnaps Johnny, wanting to cook him! Dracula steps in and magically freezes Quasimodo. This stops Quasimodo from telling anyone Johnny's secret.

Dracula takes Johnny to his room. He shows Johnny a painting of Martha, Mavis's mother. Johnny then understands why Dracula built the hotel. He also sees why Dracula is so protective of Mavis. Johnny agrees to leave for good. But Dracula convinces him to stay for Mavis's birthday party. He doesn't want to ruin her special day.

The Truth Comes Out

The party is a huge success the next night. Mavis is excited to open a gift from her mother, Martha. When Johnny and Mavis share their first kiss, Dracula gets very upset. In his anger, he accidentally admits that he tricked Mavis with the fake human town.

A still-frozen Quasimodo bursts in. Mr. Fly translates Quasimodo's frozen speech. He reveals that Johnny is a human. The other monsters are shocked and angry about the trick. But Mavis doesn't care; she still wants to be with Johnny.

Johnny pretends he's not interested in Mavis. He rejects her out of respect for her father. Then he leaves the hotel.

Dracula's Change of Heart

A heartbroken Mavis flies to the roof with her mother's present. Dracula follows her to comfort her. He learns that the present is a book. It's about how Dracula and Martha "Zinged" and fell in love. Dracula then realizes he was wrong about humans. He doesn't know if humans are still afraid of monsters.

Dracula apologizes to his monster guests. He then convinces Frank, Wayne, Griffin, and Murray to help him. They go into the human world to find Johnny. Wayne's daughter, Winnie, can track scents. She helps them find out that Johnny is about to fly back to the United States.

A Race to the Airport

The four monsters head to the airport. But they get stopped in a town celebrating a Monster Festival. The humans in the town admire the monsters. They agree to help Dracula. A group of men dressed as vampires helps Dracula stay safe from the sunlight. He rushes to the airport.

Dracula arrives just as Johnny's plane is taking off. He turns into a bat and chases the plane. The sunlight burns him, but he keeps going. He gets Johnny's attention. Dracula then flies to the plane's windshield. He uses his mind-control power on the pilot. He makes the pilot help him apologize to Johnny. Dracula tells Johnny that Mavis has grown up and can make her own choices. Johnny accepts Dracula's apology. Dracula then makes the pilot return to the Transylvanian airport.

Dracula brings Johnny back to Mavis. He announces that he approves of Johnny. Johnny tells Mavis that their "Zing" was real. The two then kiss. The monsters finish celebrating Mavis's party. Everyone at the hotel is very impressed and happy.
