History of Sony Pictures Movies

The Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group began in 1998. Back then, it was called the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. It was created by Sony to manage its many movie studios. Some of its first movie studios included Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Triumph Films, and Sony Pictures Classics.

In 1998, Sony also brought back Screen Gems as a movie studio. Screen Gems has been used for different purposes over the years by Sony.

Over time, Sony changed the names of many of its companies to include "Sony Pictures." For example, in 2002, Columbia TriStar Television became Sony Pictures Television. In 2013, the movie group officially changed its name to the "Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group." Around this time, Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks also joined the movie group.

In 2019, a new company called 3000 Pictures was formed. It joined the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group and works on projects for movies, TV, and streaming.
