How It All Began
The Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group started in 1998. It was created to manage all of Sony's movie-making companies. At the time, this included famous names like Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, and Sony Pictures Classics.
Later that year, Sony brought back its old animation and TV studio, Screen Gems, as a new film company. Over the years, Screen Gems has made many different kinds of movies for Sony.
By 2002, Sony began changing the names of its companies to feature the "Sony" brand more. For a while, the movie group was one of the last parts of the company to still use the "Columbia TriStar" name.
In 2013, the group was finally renamed the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. At the same time, two more important teams joined the group: Sony Pictures Animation, which makes animated movies, and Sony Pictures Imageworks, which creates amazing visual effects.
Sony's Movie-Making Teams
The Motion Picture Group is made up of several smaller studios, or "divisions." Each one has a special job.
Production Studios
These are the teams that actually create the movies.
- Columbia Pictures: One of the most famous movie studios in the world, known for big blockbuster films.
- TriStar Pictures: Another major studio that produces a wide variety of movies.
- Screen Gems: This studio often makes action, thriller, and horror films.
- Sony Pictures Animation: The team behind animated hits like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
- Sony Pictures Classics: Focuses on independent films and movies from other countries.
- Sony Pictures Imageworks: Creates the stunning computer-generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects you see in many films.
- 3000 Pictures: A newer studio that often turns popular books into movies and TV shows.
- Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions: This group finds and buys films that have already been made to share them with a wider audience.
Distribution Studios
Once a movie is made, these teams get it to theaters and into your home.
- Sony Pictures Releasing: Handles getting movies into theaters across North America.
- Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: Manages the release of movies on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital streaming services.
